| Post subject: | Help- what spanner size is needed |
I am pulling down my slant 6 donk for my Hambster in Australia. What size spanner, socket is needed for the two bolts that hold the small aluminum block (main seal cap) in place, at the rear of the engine. I need to remove them, to lighten the engine, by removing the crank shaft. Thanks in anticipation. |

Use a 12 point socket, for the size I think it is a 1/2 inch. Richard |

If it's the rear main seal, there were two types of bolts, forged crank and some early cast cranks got the 3/8" 12 point heads...sometime about 1978-ish someone at the plant got brilliant and started using a standard 6 point 3/8" bolt...both bolt types seem to interchange fine...Note that not all makes of sockets fit...I notice the craftsman or higher end tools work fine, the chinese sockets with the thicker 'shoulder' on the socket wont fit in the 'pocket'. What the heck is this guy talking about? My take on his post: He has an old dodge with a lifted suspension and over sized rims with low profile tires. He is removing the crankshaft to save weight so he can ship it to a friend. Does this make sense? Who does that? Why not remove the whole driveline? Just curious... |

Radars.....I interpreted this as he's breaking down just the engine into smaller pieces that are more readily handled for shipping. I think, (and I could be wrong), that "donk", down under, is equivalant to "ride", or "wheels", or any other of a half-dozen slang terms that we use for cars. (Notice he asked about a "spanner" rather than a "wrench", which to us is two distinctly different types of wrenches.) Roger |
