Recently had tires replaced on the 64 Dart. Told them it had left handed threads and sure enough when it came time to replace the front brake shoes the wheel studs are spinning on the hub. Left front has two that I can get the lug nuts off of. Standard 9 in. drums, 14 in. Cragar SS wheels w/ the small bolt pattern. I really don't want to destroy the wheel to get it off. any HELP ??? |

Remove the whole assembly by removing the front bearing retainer. Chisel or grind the back of the studs off and then replace the studs and or the whole spindle/drum assembly. Then send a bill to the tire store... |

Dremel tool and carbide bits.......cut the lug nuts in half to get them off. OH....wait.....the Crager SS uses a shank type lug nut. Looks like it's grinder time. You MIGHT be able to find somebody that's good with a cutting torch that can take the tops off the lug nuts without damaging the rim. Don't EVER go to that tire shop again. Roger |

That happend to me one time w/ my Road Runner.Take off all the nuts you can....Then let the jack down till most all the weight is on the side of the studs that were spinning.if you can get the weight to hold the studs sideways enough, you can get the nuts started. When I bought my Barracuda, the same thing must have happened to the last owner, cuz when I took off the drivers front, the studs all had weld globs holding them from spinning.LOL Good luck!! Wrong. Go to that shop, again. Tell them to repair the problem.

Thanks for all the replies. I will try to loosen the lug nuts with the weight of the tire & wheel on the ground. I will post the results in a couple of days. The left front wheel has only a couple of lug nuts that are keeping it on the car so I can't drive it back to the tire shop. As much as I'd like to show them what they've done it's just not worth it to cause further damage right now. |

I'm with Charrlie_S to the extent that you should not let the shop off the hook. I had a problem with an NTB shop who broke off studs and ended up screwing up the front brake drums (10") in an attempt to fix the problem. The brake drum issue didn't show up until a couple of months later in the form of radial cracks around the outside of the drum. I wrote the store a letter detailing my experience and followed it up with a phone call a few days later. The manager asked to see the drums, which I took to the store that day. He agreed with the damage issues I raised. They were unable to find the drums locally, but offered to re-imburse me for the cost of drums if I could find them (within reason). It took a few days, but I found a pair. I had new studs fitted to the hubs and the drums swaged on by a machine shop. The NTB store paid the bill. From the experience, I learned NEVER let anyone with an impact hammer go near the driver's side of my Mopar if it has LH studs. People have gotten upset with me until they see how it works for themselves. No one wants to brake a stud off if they can avoid it. |

As luck would have it we got the lug nuts off. We put two pry bars behind the spokes of the wheel and was able to get the two off. We inspected all of the stud holes in the hub and most of them are smoothed out. Then we had all the studs welded to the hub mostly because replacement hubs are scarce. I wasn't my first choice but the Dart had to be moved to make way for another project............... |
