Post subject:  Head Removal ????

While keeping engine in the vehicle I want to remove the head and intake/exhaust manifold as one unit.Is this possible? I plan on unbolting exhaust from bottom of manifold and any thing else that needs unbolting and then lift everything out. Am I going in the wrong direction here?

The alternator bracket, spark plug wires, valve cover, and the short hose that runs from the head to the water pump will have to come off but, I would take the manifolds off as a unit. The head is heavy and awkward enough without the manifolds.

It can be done. I have removed and installed the head and manifold assembly off as a unit by myself in a 64 valiant. With my brother's help, I do it on an (unfortunately) somewhat regular basis in his 83 van. Bear in mind that I am 6'4", 300 pounds, and I lift weights regularly. If you are not a big person with lots of upper body strength, I do not recommend you try and lift the manifolds and head as a unit. Use a friend or a hydraulic crane if you really want to keep it all assembled upon removal. Otherwise, your back will thank you for separating the manifolds from the head.

Yes it is heavy...have a buddy help or use the engine lift like reed said...

Make sure to drain the water down or the head will puke it down the bores...

If the head doesn't budge after you remove the head bolts, you can move it back and forth by using the manifolds as a lever...in some cases I have left the spark plugs in and turned the starter over to 'bump' the head off the block and gasket wrather than wrestling with the manifolds...

Good point. I always leave the plugs in so the compression in one or more cylinders helps "burp" the head of the block.

And no matter how much I drain the coolant, I always get coolant in the cylinders.

Thanks every one for your input. I did get the head off and we used an engine hoist. It will be easier to remove manifolds. I was fortunate the exhaust nuts came off with not a lot of resistance. I had water in two cylinders and the rest looked normal with carbon build up on top of pistons. Next will be to get block out and see what I will have in the way of a salvageable block. I will keep you posted. Also does any one on here know of a person in the Raleigh,NC area that belongs to this site? I saw he had a carb/manifold set up for sale on e-Bay and I can't find the post. If you know who I am talking about please let me know. Thanks for your help.

Thanks Big T I will contact Crazy Dart. I have been in contact with a guy here in Apex and I am waiting to hear from him for a time when we can get together. Now for the bad news!!! I went back to my shop so I can get engine ready to pull. I took air compressor and blew off engine when I discovered a hole in the block from the rod. It was on the left bank under the manifold so I did not see it until I removed manifold and cleaned off block. So.....I am on the hunt for an engine. I have located 5 possibilities here in North Carolina but with it being Saturday all are closed. I will have to call on Monday. Any way life is full of surprises!!!

"Bmimken" has some parts, and is in Butner, NC. He and I see each other at races and such too. I could possibly supply a block, but not on short order. "Rock" in Raleigh might also have an engine or two or know where to find?

Thanks Dart270! I haven't heard from the guy here in Apex so if you could give me info on Rock in Raleigh that would be great. I recently saw a fancy intake and carb set up (offenhauser maybe?) on e-bay and the guy was from Raleigh. Trouble is I could not find the post after I read it and I wasn't able to contact seller because I don't have an e-bay account. Any way get back with me and I can go from there. Again thanks!!
