Greetings from the northern tip of the lower peninsula of Michigan. The day after tomorrow, I'm hopping in my '73 Dart and heading to Seattle. I am optimistically planning on 3 long driving days to cover the ~2300 miles.

Sooner than later, the car's going to want pipe(s) and a muffler. Anyone got a recommendation for who does nice pipework in the Seattle area?

(I'd better make it there; the day after tomorrow is my 10th anniversary. Other half's already in Seattle by plane; we'll celebrate once I get there. So far pretrip: Remflex manifold gasket, Permaseal head gasket, new exhaust manifold with heat riser that doesn't spin 360° because this one has an actual plate in it, aluminum intake, Dutra oil pump, valve stem seals, ESPO leaf springs, new vibration damper, new trans damper, flywheel-type A/C clutch, badly-needed new Evans engine wiring harness, new heater valve, and if I get time, new radio...otherwise it's gonna be a long AM-only drive once I sing myself hoarse.)

Stop by. We will fix all the stuff that went wrong on the way.

Seattle is That Way From Here <-----

800 miles a day........divided by 80 mph ....is 10 hours
800 miles a day........divided by 70 mph ....is 11.5 hours
800 miles a day........divided by 60 mph ....is 13 hours.

Right now there is 12.5 hours of daylight per day......you gain 1 hour per day going west (time zones)......seems doable

You need to be in Billings MT or Medicine Hat AB on your second night.....

Avoid fuel other than 87 (or 86.5)

Watch for hallucinations.........

Slow down for your last half hour or you wont be able to sleep.

Never sleep behind the wheel.....even when parked.

Have 3 pairs of sunglasses for traveling west so you can change them regularly.

The Kenora Bypass is longer than you think......

The Calgary bypass is shorter than you think.

There is no Rapid City bypass.....its always slow.

Highway 212 in Montana is the best shortcut in America....fuel in Belle Fourche.

Food and Coffee are better in Canada........
Gas is cheaper in America.

The voices on the radio will guide you......

The God of Good Gas Mileage and High Performance is named Russetta. She is a harsh Mistress........

Would love to but it can't be this trip -- got an SAE Lighting Committee meeting to attend (and a working group session to chair) starting on the 13th. I gotta book it. Besides, I already just re-imported the '73 into the States, having exported it from the USA and imported it to Canada almost exactly a year ago.

You're only sayin' that 'cause it's true.

That is exactly what I figured. Should be interesting. Last time I was in Billings, I got snowed-in there. That was in early Spring of 1995 in my '65 Canadian Valiant. The time before that, I was in the passenger seat of my dad's '62 Lancer (now mine), on our first-ever road trip. I wasn't old enough to hold a driving licence. No, wait, that snow-in might not be the last time I was in Billings; I drove that Valiant back and forth between Eugene and Denver a few times. But I don't think I've ever been in Billings other than in an A-body Mopar.

That depends on the degree to which the recent ministrations to the Dart have addressed the ping-on-the-highway issue. But I'm curious: what makes you say so?

I'll only disregard the ones that aren't real.

Good idea.

Oh, I'm known on occasion to pull over for ten minutes of eye-rest, but sleeping behind the wheel is an impossibility anyhow.

I have three pairs of glasses: Regular clear glass, polarised grey sun, and yellow night-driving. What's your three-pair strategy?

Mmmm...explain how come it's better to add 130 miles to the trip vs. sticking to the interstate?

Yikes! Road trip! Reminds me of the time my family drove from Salt Lake City to Tacoma in three days, or, even better, the time we drove from Tacoma, Washington to Anchorage, AK in three days.

The only exhaust place I know is in Tacoma, so that's not much help.

If you break down and need a tow, you have my cell!

Its too bad we can't have a mini-meetup while your in town. It would be fun to sit around and talk about slants, the guys around here only care about big V8s or ricing their '80s-'90s VW hatchbacks :(

Dan, can the new equipment & save a buck, it would do a body good to listen to the guys chatting 12 hours a day during your ride to the left coast… LOL

Have a great trip!

Bill

What rulebook says we can't…?

WJA: There's something the matter with the dash speaker; it sounds all distorted. Makes Rush Limbaugh sound like Che Guevara. Nobody seems to know how to fix it.

There is enough alcohol in the higher grade fuels west of the Mississip to bugger hose and tune.

Wearing one pair of glasses for 12 hours is like wearing one pair of shoes all day. Switching them regularly keeps your nose and ears from wearing out.

Highway 212 will save you 1.5 hours between Rapid City and Billings. Ask Seymour.....besides.....who would want to skip the Bentonite Capital of America?

Perhaps you are taking I 94......?

Catch the ferry over to Bremerton, and take a 10 minute drive to Kitsap Muffler in Gorst. The manager is a die hard Mopar gal, and they do splendid work. I can post up pictures of their work on both my rigs if you would like a peak.

Have a fun and safe trip. I did Seattle to Indiana and back this spring break in my '76 Dart. Voltage regulator in Billings, MT, and black ice in the Badlands. Otherwise, spectacular trip.

How long will you be in Seattle?

Actually, I know at least in the Seattle area there is a AM station that broadcasts NPR. I used to listen to it in the morning as I idled my way from Tacoma to Seattle on I-5 in my old 72 Satellite that only had AM radio. 1340 AM I believe.

I used to take my Satellite and 5th Ave to The Muffler Shoppe in White Center. Dave always did a good job for me. Hope your trip is more fun than my drive to Texas (underpowered 10' Uhaul towing a 2K lb trailer with a 3800lb car).

Hoodogie, yeah, I don't wanna miss that.

94W to 90W, yes. Put 49648 and 98115 as the start and end points in Mapquest and see how it says I should go. What deviations do you suggest now?

Gee Dan, I don’t know what to say…

Rush is on FM in these parts, so if there is a fundamental design flaw in those old oval speakers I haven’t experienced it first hand. Also, I don’t recall ever hearing a rendition of Evita since owning my present or previous Dart, or a Citgo advertisement emitted from center stage. As things go, my dash is pretty much a Marxist free zone.

I suspect that where your car is from the left cost, it may have spent time down in Berkley, and had some kind of message-inverter installed, most likely wired in series to your radio’s audio output, by one of the locals. Please understand, this is just speculation on my part…

One never knows with these old used cars, dose one? When you get a chance, do take a peek up under the dash, and just to be on the safe side, during your trip, perhaps a tinfoil hat will help get you safely across the amber waves of grain, and the Rockies… LOL

Well there you go Dan, pull the hat when you see the Space Needle. All will be good my friend… when Rush’s dulcet tones come through that inverter…

Safety first old intrepid one,

Bill

Well I figured with the anniversary (congrats!), the SAE stuff, and finding an exhaust shop that you wouldn't have much time for a meet up. If I'm wrong please correct me. Anyway, if someone wants to get something together it would be fun to see other's cars.
