Post subject:  slant six t-56??

Hi,

I am interested in installing the t-56 behind my slant six -65 Valiant. I swapped to the 833 from the original 904. But even with the 2.94 rear axle ratio I think it overrevs on the highway and the acceleration is not exciting. I tried to contact quicktime about a bellhousing, but they seem to think it is too stupid, to even answer. (perhaps they are right;)

Got any tips and ideas?

Thanks

T-56s are huge and not very well geared for a slant. The double overdrive works well in a car that has huge torque at low RPM like a Viper, but you'd have to run something like 4.88s in the rear end to ever be able to use 6th gear with a slant and then 1st would be near worthless. Look at the gearing of a V6 Mustang T5 and you'll see ratios that are also well suited to a slant 6 car. 94-97 Mustang 3.8 L 3.35 1.93 1.29 1.00 0.73 I'd pair that trans with 3.55 gears or maybe 3.23s if you don't mind down shifting for hills or live in the flat lands.

I may try this sometime. I can say that 0.63:1 on my aftermarket T5 is OK with 3.91s and would be fine with 3.55s. The lowest I've run is 2.08 final drive in my '64 Dart (0.68X3.23) and it was OK by me. For the T56, I believe 6th is 0.5:1 so, anything less than 4.10s would not be useful.

I think the ratios are a bit closer together on the T56 than the T5s? That is the main reason to do this. Now that I'm talking about it, for all the trouble I might just get a T5 made with a higher 1st gear (2.8?) and lower OD (0.78?).

Honestly, the T5 swap will be so much easier and cheaper than a T56, you might consider the T5. Of course, if you want to be the first guy to do T56/Slant, then by all means...

There seem to be two sets of ratios:

2.97 1st up to 0.62 OD (very nice IMHO for Slant)
2.66 1st up to 0.50 OD (not as nice, as Josh said)

Don't mean to Hijack this thread but I asked before and no one replied. We all can find the torque ratings of these transmissions but I wonder what the torque rating is on our iron case 833's. T-5 may be great for the street or strip with out slicks. I just don't see it living behind a 100 hard launches on slicks? I may be totally wrong too. :D

You wont break a good T5 with a slant......

and if you did...you could buy another one.

Clutches are a bigger deal than boxes with our cars.

Now I wouldn't mind the .5 OD for the track, but the loss in time clutching that many gears just kills the whole deal...of course looking at my rpm's with 4.56's and the .73 OD on the highway does make the .5 OD ratio much more appealing...but only for street and economy...

Just on the junkyard hunt, the price of the T-56 vs. the price of the T-5 economywise the T-5 wins out...

I have a '64 A833 in my '65. This same transmission came behind the Race HEMI's, with a slightly higher first gear (2.88 instead of 3.08 ). So I don't think you need to worry about the torque capacity.

ok guys, it will take some planning.....

I use my car as an everyday driver during summertime, doing anything from shopping to 100mph highway driving.

by the way, last year I used the v8 2.66 1 gear ratio box behind my six. I had no problem even with my 2.94 rear ratio, to keep up with normal traffic. (today I have the 3.09)

So wouldn't the Viper 2.66 be the t-56 to prefer, considering the rear ratio is drastically raised??

The bellhousing shouldn't be a problem, just use the SB to T56 bellhousing and the /6 to SB adapter.

The real problem is the torsion bar crossmember. That has to be cut out to install a T56 which means you need to reengineer that part of the chassis.

A T5 would be a much easier swap.

Andy is right it would take a lot more cutting to get the T56 in there - probably a whole new trans tunnel, upper X-member, and maybe a widened lower X-member (relocated holes in existing X).

ok, I am beginning to realize the magnitude of this project...

Is there any other 6-speed that could be appropriate?

The BMW has the problem of not having a separate bellhousing. There is a very special supercharged Swedish BMW CSI, which has the t-56 tranny. The guy who modified the car used a BMW bellhousing (perhaps the old cars were separate). I guess the swap was easier in the BMW since it doesn't have torsion bars.

Somehow I am not satisfied with 5 gears, dunno why...

Thanks for all good tips!

I did not cut the floor in my car (except for a shifter) and it made the swap much easier and cleaner.

An extra gear isn t worth the grief.

You can easily machine off the BMW Bell and graft on a slant bell if both are aluminum........

Post subject:  Want T56 vs Need T56...

I too want to mate a T56 to my slant six.
Quick Time Performance have a great selection of products.
Is the slant six something they are tooled up for or am I stuck with custom fabrication?

An "off the shelf" kit would be ideal. I expect to select a clutch and have a steel flywheel custom fabbed here in Australia.
Just need to know what my options are for converting my combo from a 904TF to a decent manual transmission up to the task for a top speed run on Lake Gairdner.
Is there any leads or information here that someone can share on what is available ex USA?

Found this from the advice of a fellow member:

The info for the slant six is right at the bottom of the application guide list.
