I have a 60 Valiant with a a-833o/d from a 76 Duster installed(cast iron case/short tail hosing).I had this trans rebuilt a year ago because of it being noisy in all gears and not shifting well and in general it was just wore out.I got the trans back and installed and it worked well except for a little noise in o/d in which I was told was normal. The car sat for most of the winter and has had about 2500 miles put on it this summer. My problem is that I cant drive it over 68 mph due to roaring and rattling in o/d,it also makes a terrible noise decelerating from over 68mph. The trans is extremley quiet in all other gears and up to 68 in o/d and also shifts very smooth with no noise.I use ATF in the trans because that is what the 76 Duster Factory manual says to use and it seems to work well.
I am thinking that the o/d gear is bad or that a thrust bearing or washer was left out but Im a novice when it comes to transmissions.I also have a 82 model a-833 o/d trans from a van with a aluminum case, can I swap internals if need be?
As always, any help from y'all is greatly appreciated.

Thank you
HyperValiant

You have nothing to lose by going back to the rebuild place, and reminding them that you had mentioned the noise it was making in overdrive which is now much worse.

Yep sounds like you have some play in the OD section, either the gears or possibly a bearing. Have you pulled the bearing retainer? If you have a 'trench' where the bearing has worn a pattern in the retainer, you need a new retainer or have that one spot faced and milled...I would also recommend 80-90wt tranny lube, instead of ATF for daily driving.

As an FYI, I just put a 1975 iron case in the Hpak duster...I had to part down 3 A-833 OD's to get one good set of gears and guts...there is also a gear pitch change somewhere in the 76-77 range...so if you do it that way, you have to count teeth to see which version you got as well and if the gears and countershaft gearing will fit your current box.

Wait a minute, tranny noise?!!? How can you hear that with a hyperpak and exhaust suitable for the strip????

Damn guys,.that was quick!!

Slant fin,the shop is under new managment and dont want to deal with me and the warranty was only for 6months anyway, but it just goes to show how bad the pride of workmanship has become.
DI,I havnt pulled the trans yet but will check all of those things when I do.I do have the help of a local Hemi SuperStock racer to walk me through this.
As far as being able to hear my noise,I dont ever make to o/d on the track but it does sing pretty good right around 4500-5000 rpm right before I shift.
I live in a small Southern town and everybody knows my Valiant and it dont hide easy even in a crowd.Back in June ,I was coming back from lunch and turned up a side street with tall buildings down either side and I was running a glass pack with 2 1/14 in and 2 inch out the back,So I turned it up about 5000 in second just to hear the echo,'bout the time I got pulled into my parking spot at the shop, here come one of our local law enforcers in a new Charger. This kid(around28)gets out and walks up to my door and doesnt even say anything ,just looks at me like"Dude, your old enough to know better"then politely suggests that I get a "real muffler on that damn thing"(his words)and walked away.I complied by installing a Thrush turbo and now she's pretty quiet on the freeway but still has a good topend wail and a healthy idle.
Thanks again for quick help.

you can likely get good info by speaking with a dedicated a-833 shop like Brewers or Passion.

I currently am using Valvoline since Napa no longer carries my favorite brand of GL-4...it became GL-5 for manual transmissions...so far no complaints...

I was very happy with the service I got from S&K in up state New York. Give them a call as well. They supplied me with gears for my cast iron 833)D rebuild about 8 years ago.

The counter shaft does carry the load in OD and not in 3rd. Sometimes the counter shaft itself gets loose in the case, and the bearings are no longer a snug fit.

Gl-5 can handle the hypoid gears in rear-ends and has different high-pressure additives.

Those additives may have an effect on the brass synchros in a tranny.

If it's a dual-rated GL4/5, it will be fine.

That would be correct.

Gotta really look at the labels...I love Autozone's "Manual Transmission" oil...it says it's for it...then goes on to say it's GL-5 for sure grip and positraction rear-ends...that's the big NOPE on that one.

The funny part is not many places carry the stuff in part of Oregon, but you slip down to Albany and it's like a 20 year time warp to the past...you can buy a case of the stuff at the Costco there...
