Post subject:  hardened valve seats

last year i had to remove the head because the hardened valve seat on 4e had come loose, bouncing on the valve like a ring on a string. no damage was done  a local shop was able to reseat it and peen it back in, i asked them to check the rest when they had it. now 1e has come loose  same rattling sound, same pre tear down inspection. the valve stem wont come up fully, stays down about 1/4". so...whats causing this? and whats the fix? weld them in? more peeinig?

The cause is that the seats don't have the proper interference fit. The fix is to use a machinist that should actually be a machinist. If the head has to be peened to retain the seat then the seat is not tight enough in the head and the valve and seat will run hot.

The good news is that valve seats come in different OD sizes so you should be able to find a larger size insert and re-do the job, using the correct interferance fit.

thanks guys for your replies. after talking to a good head shop (Heads by Rick) i may be better off by starting with a new head. will take it out to him tomorrow and let him check it out.
HBR builds racing engines and seems to have a good reputation.i walked into the back of his shop and stood next to his dragster while he made a pull on his engine dyno (the ground shook). then he called me in and we talked about my slant six.
