My 73 dart is still running terrible but idling perfect

today i would give it alot of gas in park and the car would die completely

and a couple times i saw a good sized flame come right back up through the carb

is this a timing issue?? or what else could it be?? thanks

Could be weak accelerator pump shot, causing lean condition during throttle plate opening.
Could be dirt in carburetor.
Could be timing, too advanced.
Could be vacuum leak causing lean condition.
Could be low float level.

If you slowly open throttle, dose the engine gain rpm without burping through the carburetor? If so “Accelerator Pumpâ€￾ is number one suspect.

Lots of possiblities .... timing, lose timing chain, bad valves, unburended fuel left in intake runners.... start with the basics
.. a lose timing chain will streach under loud causing timing issues...
