i am the proud owner of a 74 valiant 225/904 the problem i am having is with my tranny at first it wouldnt go into park it was acting like it was beyond the shifters range after replacing the shifter bushings and readjusting i realized that the shifter lever (the one directly on the tranny)with the shifter unhooked i am able to rotate the shift lever 20 or 30 degrees before i feel it "catch"then i can feel it clicking into each gearP,R,N,D,2,1etc when i reverse direction it does the same 20 or 30 d ees of play followed by it beimg able to click in all gears 1,2,D,N,R,P when i pulled the pan i am able to see the shifter mechanism on the side of the valve body and can see all the levers move and all the valves going in and out the play seems to be between the shift lever and inside the shifter mechanism .Is this a servicable part ? does anyone have an exploded view pic of it ,if i have to remove the valve body is there springs and balls that will fly out at me i am a fairly good mechanic but no tranny man any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

That outside shifter lever has 1 large round hole towards the transmission and a "D" shaped hole outward from the transmission. Both of these need to be on the large outer part of the shift shaft that comes out of the trans. It is held tight by a bolt and a sort of captive nut (the nut is in a recess). Make sure that peice is all the way down before you tighten the bolt, not real tight towards the trans leave small amout of clearance.
