Are the slant six exhaust manifolds all created equal or are some better performace wise than others? Does the Super Six have its own special exhaust manifold? I am not talking about aftermarket tubular headers, just the factory installed pieces. |

Most super six's had a 2 1/4" outlet, but don't know if one is better than any other. Richard |

All slant-6 exhaust manifolds had a 2" outlet. All of them. Every single one. None of them had a 2¼" outlet. There is no special exhaust manifold for the Super Six; exhaust manifold variations are by production date, not by carburetor type. Fopar, the 2¼" Super Six item you are thinking of is the headpipe, not the manifold outlet. It, like the 1¾" headpipe on 1bbl models, was bolted up to the 2" exhaust manifold outlet. There is no performance benefit to one factory exhaust manifold vs. another. There are a couple different styles of heat riser valve, four different styles of choke pocket/stove, manifolds with/without provisions for a heat-tube style choke or throttle plate anti-ice system, manifolds with/without an O2 sensor port, and there were nodular vs. grey iron castings from the factory. With some amount of adaptation centered around the choke, a '73+ exhaust manifold can be successfully installed on any previous-year vehicle. The hardest exhaust manifolds to deal with are the '70-'72 items with the open choke stove sealed off by a stamped steel cup and a gasket. All others have variously-shaped cast-in (closed) pockets. Performance benefit is found with Dutra Duals. |

Just wondering if the 2 1/4" headpipe is available, say at a parts store, and if so what model/year to inquire about. The exhaust upgrade isn't until the current (fairly new) exhaust wears out, but that day will come. |
