Is it a Holley 1920 or 1945? Usually "best" and "cheapest" don't go hand and hand with these things. Avoid anything that says remanufactured. Here is one that says new on ebay. Maybe the guys here can check the numbers for you to see if its an original carb or not.

ESP47,

Great lead. This is what I have found..

1976-'74 - 1945
1973 - 1920

Mine is a '75 , 225. Could the 1920 be modified ?

Grassy,

Yes. I pulled off my 1945 that came on my 74 and installed a 1920 Economaster type carb. I had to shorten the choke rod by putting an "S" bend in it.

Click on the red link below my name to view the pictures of it. Double click on the pictures when they come up for full screen view.

Ted,

Sweet car !

To do the switch, do I need to plug the low speed air bleed ? Photo 22 of 31.

I don't understand this ..The accelerator pump shot is keeping the carb pretty clean! How does the gas pump keep the carb clean..i must apologize..I come from 30+ years with brit cars where the SU carb os soo easy :)

Thanks
ian.

No you don't. The Economaster version of the 1920 came this way. I have several posts on the results from drilling it out to various sizes. It just allows more air into the idle circuit if your running large jets such as a #62 to a #66 or bigger and allows you to retain the same good economy with out any over rich odors coming from the tail pipe. With 9.5 to 1 compression and a #66 jet it feels like a 318 under the hood.

The SU carbs are a CV (constant Velocity/air flow) like most motorcycles. They use a separate enrichment that works independent of air flow. Like a separate "starting carb" or lowering the main jet. Most American carbs control the air flow through the carb for enrichment. Basically when the choke closes (cold) it forces the manifold vacuum up higher in the carb to pull more fuel through the main jet.
