Well, honestly the HEI part I think is 100% good. My old distributor had some chipped teeth so I used the opportunity to put in a new one and do HEI. Only thing is I have never done a distributor of this style. I tried to mark off where the rotor was and just go from there but, obviously with the chipped teeth, I was just trying to get lucky. The truck feels like it wants to start but doesn't. My HEI is completely stand alone from the factory wiring except for the trigger. Plus with spark it's gotta be working right? So really my question is how do I get this thing timed properly. #1 piston to TDC and then point the rotor to #1 where the cap would be??? I don't have a timing light but could pick one up as they're pretty darn cheap! Any help is greatly appreciated! I'll show pics of my HEI conversion later, it's a little different from what others have done(But just a tiny bit) I'm in Scarborough, ON, Canada if anyone is local and can come help! Free beer is in it EDIT: I'm using the same cap and rotor as was on my stock distributor, maybe that could be an issue? |

Did you remove the slotted piece from the distributor that the governor weights slide in, and the reluctor rides on? If so, you may have turned that slotted part 180 degrees when reassembling, which will put your rotor button 180 degrees out of position. The engine will manifest wanting to start, with a cough & a fart every so often keeping your hopes up to no avail… I did this once, it drove me nuts for a few days thinking every item in the ignition circuit had somehow failed. I swapped in new parts in a wild eyed frenzy until the sun rose over Marblehead… Bill |

Didn't touch anything in the distributor! Bought it and put it in! Talked to a local guy he said it sounds like I'm 1 tooth off Going to pull it right now. |

The wires from your dizzy to your module could be on the wrong terminals. Try switching them around and see what happens. What sort of module are you using? Did you bridge your ballast wires ? |

My truck doesn't have a ballast, and if it does I don't know where the hell it is. Try switching them around and see what happens. What sort of module are you using? Did you bridge your ballast wires ? I'm using a Napa Echlin one like in the HEI conversion thread. I went to pull the distributor yesterday and put cyl #1 to TDC, but I don't have a socket or wrench that's big enough for the crank bolt.... |

If your fan belt is tight you can turn the engine by turning a fixed fan (not viscous drive ones) or use a strap wrench on the water pump pulley |

I use a remote starter switch tap it a little past TDC and roll it backwards with the fan to get there. If rolling it by hand pull the spark plugs. I have never had to remove spark plugs, every time it comes on a compression stroke I just pause for a second and let the "air" in the cylinder hiss pass the rings. You have to change your grip any way and it takes the same amount of time so you do not lose anything. I do this on my flatheads/V8s and slant 6. |

This can drive you crazy because the rotor changes positions a fair amount as you slide the distributor in. I used to have a spare cap with a big hole drilled in the top so I could see exactly where the rotor was pointing as it went in. It can also be out 180 degrees and try to start, but not. I have done that one too. The rotor can be aligned perfectly for the exhaust stroke, and look right, and give you encouraging coughs and spurts, but still not be right, and will not run. Good luck. You will get it right. Sam |

Two things I would do,Bring #1 to tdc. Next is pull the plugsOnly thing is I have never done a distributor of this style. Best way is to swap for new or a set you have put wet ones in sun for 24 or use a torch on each. best way is to swap. lol shadetree |
