Post subject:  stalls after freeway

Hi.
I've been having this problem with my dart since i got it. Driving around town, it runs good, driving on the freeway- it runs good. once i get off the free way it stalls. it will start back up but has a rough idle. I read online that this problem is usually due to a faulty egr- exhaust gas recirculation i believe? Im not sure if my car has one... So i thought that the stove on my exhaust manifold ( not the intake manifold) could be causing the problem because it can stick open or closed. So on that, how do i know which way is open and which is closed on the exhaust stove? Any help with this would be great. thanks!

If your engine is a true 65 it wont have an EGR valve. Chrysler has a lube for the choke stove/heat riser do a search for the grease. (its not standard stuff)

ok will do. it just doesn't seem that the problem would be that simple...it seems like when it gets warm is when this starts to happen. I just put in an electric fan and 3 core aluminum radiator so I'm pretty sure it's not the cooling system.

does anyone know where to find a new spring assy for the exhaust
manifold stove? I'd rather but a rand new one then try greasing a 45 year old one

There were some new exhaust manifolds available. Some NOS popped up this year. Think they were on Ebay, but don't remember for certain. Run a search up there and keep an eye on it.
There is also a re-pop coming out of China that some folks have tried.

Since I haven't put an OEM or aftermarket direct replacement on anything, ever, I can't speak to how well the Chinese ones work. I would make an assumption the NOS ones would be great.

Hi eppy25, you can have those problems you describe when the fuel tank's ventilation tube/hose is clogged or severly restricted, giving you a low carb fuel level. A hissing sound when opening the fuel filler cap immediately when this happens, will tell you if there is vacuum in the tank.

Question... Would the hissing be pressure coming out of the tank or a vacuum in the tank?
I seem to have quite a pressure come from my tank when when I take the cap off...

NOT to hijack this thread or anything!! lol

Vacuum, you are pumping out of the tank.

Back to the OP, you could also have mal-adjusted floats and/or a stuck inlet needle/jet combination.

The floats would allow the fuel bowls to run dry at speed and the inlet/jet could allow to much fuel flow and cause the engine to stall out.

Yeah, Eppy, there is more than one explanation for your problem. My Dart had the same symptoms due to a ruptured choke pull-off. A careful cleaning and rebuilding of the carb should be easy. Do a search on this site for "heat soak".

hmmmm. The carb I have is a remanufactured one. as of right now because of other posts that I've read I'm going to perform a valve adjustment. I installed an electronic choke last week which is working great so I don't think thats the problem (because it was happening before the new choke as well) but I'll still check the float level as well.

I would HIGHLY recommend that you adjust the valve lash before you do anything else. Rough idle and stalling at higher engine temps is a classic symptom of tight valves.

you guys were right!!!! valve adjust and now she runs f***ing amazing!!!! quick follow up question. Im installing a pointless ignition system from. pertronix. should i remove the ballast resistor or splice into the 12v ignition going into the ballast resistor? both options are given. Has anyone had any better luck with one or the other? just curious! thanks again guys.
