I just recently bought a 170 cb slant 6. While i was pulling the tranny of, i noticed a lot of wierd things.
1: its a push botton 727

2: The starter was in a different place

3: There was a massive, thick addapter plate

4: there is a monsterous spacer for the flex plate

5: The blot pattren apperers not to match an RB or LA tranny.

What in the world do I have? All i know is, it came out of an old truck.

You have one of the rare 67-down adapters from slant 6 engine to V8 (smallblock LA) trans. You can adapt any LA trans to a Slant 6 engine now. Congrats.

Never heard of this behind a 170. A 904 is more than you need for that motor.

I believe turboram is looking to buy/borrow one of these adapter plates/spacers.

Lou

I'll buy it now! I'm very willing to share with others for a pattern if needed. Pat

The bolt pattern is only small block 727, or a A-500 or A-518, not a LA-904
See this thread.

This is almost correct (A-500 is based on the A-904LA). I have one of these and one of the last aluminum adaptors made...the original is for a 727 and the 904 won't work correctly without some carving. I need to chuck up the other adaptor and see what is out of place to make it work for the A904. Currently work and slant six dissections are putting this project on hold (that and only 3 guys are interested...which is not enough takers for a run).

If the cost was within my grasp, I would be interested in a full adapter plate setup to put a smallblock transmission behind a slant (mostly an A-500). Last I checked, Wildcat was selling full sets (adapter, torque converter spacer, and bolts) for about $150. I could see going to $200 for new stuff, especially aluminum, but $150 is near the top of my budget.

D.Idiot- How many takers do you need for a run? I'm still trying to find a workable adapter, factory original or other, to mate an A500 to a '75 slant. $150 is at the top of my budget too, but I'm interested! Anyone else?

Five is the most minimal run, but at that rate the price is well above everyone's "limit". It's that big block of aluminum that does it. There
are some centering and starter hole mismatch issues I have to measure out, luckily the CAD layout is done it just needs to be readjusted. The
main advantage is the aluminum version is much lighter than the orignal
iron version.

If you look in the thread I linked to, you will see the difference is the starter location. The 904 uses a 12 inch dia ring gear on the converter, and the A-500/518 uses a 13 ring gear. So the starter location is more outboard, on the 500/518/727. There is also a mismatch on two bolt holes between the 904 and the 500/518. I don't know why you would be concerned with making the adapter work with the 904. Why adapt a LA-904 to a slant when there are plenty of G-904's available, that bolt up without the adapter.

The A-500, that's why everyone is interested...it's much lighter and a bit smaller than the big A-518...

This may be answered elsewhere:
Would this type of adapter work for a manual transmission made to mate with a mopar small block?

Like a 5 speed Dakota tranny? Too tall to fit without floor mods. Just use a proper bellhousing for the engine to trans.

No I have a particular kit in mind (Hurst Driveline Conversions) that comes complete with a bellhousing that mates to the mopar small block and the TREMEC T-500 tranny. Thanks
