Me and my dad are arguing about the price of head work. How much have some of you guys paid to put harden valve seats in and machine the head? What all did you have done and what did it cost?

Late 70's 447 peanut plug head-

Hardened exhaust seats-Install and grind
3 angle valve job
New Bronze guides-12
Mill head to attain proper CC combustion chamber
(CC will change with new seats and valves from previous
measurements)
Install and finish EngineBldr OS valves bought off Ebay
Check and install EngineBldr Springs/Locks/Keepers bought off Ebay
Had machinist take some time to open up the bowl a bit before installing
seats.

$427.08

Then I spent 2 hours gasket matching the ports and hogging the restrictions and scabs out of the runners.

I have had from 250 to 1500 for head work.
Most of the heads I have done now are $600 each.
This includes cleaning, check for cracks, hardened seats, New Engine builder valves, Erson springs locks and retainers, milling, 3 angle valve job, new bronze guides and bowl hogging.
When I get it back its ready for porting and clean up then paint.

I'm in Aus and I've been quoted approx $600 for:

everything needed to make it unleaded compliant. shave the head (this is $160) clean the head up etc. this also included installing bigger valves.

However I have to supply the valves parts etc this wasn't included in the cost.

just got my head back from the machine shop, took him a bone yard head to start with. he sonic checked it, did a valve job using the old valves, shimed the springs and cut it .030 (57cc now) for $222. being super broke i had to use the old parts im glad they were built to last

Last head I had done about 2 years ago:

Serdi Valve Grind 6 cyl OHV $92.00
K-line bronze valve guides $48.00
Machine for hard seat $63.00
Surface head $36.00
additional milling (raise CR) $80.00
Clean and magnaflux head $25.00
Valve seats $11.40

Machine shop bill: $355.40

Engnbldr valves (with locks) were $63 at the time, picked up at his store in Portland. 340 replacement springs and retainers were $61.

Total bill was $479.40 without gaskets or paint. That price doesn't include any of the port work as I did that all myself and those tools were paid for a long time ago. Rounding out the upgrades was a 390 Holley on an Offy intake and 2 1/4" exhaust with a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler. The car is a lot more fun to drive and still gets good mileage.

I would not bother with any "head job" less than about $300-350, these days, and Josh has it laid out nicely for a "performance upgrade" head job. That's about what I paid on my last head job. Any comments on my use of language??
