Post subject: | Headers into new exhaust |
I got a new set of Clifford shorty headers for my 170 today, and I'm planning on running duals for the look under the bumper and for the sound. My 170 has the following: Comp Cams 252 Carter 2BBL off of a 318 Head shaved .020 w/port and polish work Auto tranny Right now I'm running a stock exhaust manifold into a 2 1/4" pipe with a glasspack. The exhaust shop never got it right, and when my glasspack when it, the flanges never meet properly now, so it leaks. The glasspack also drones kind of bad at highway speeds, so I'll go with different mufflers when the system gets installed. I've done some searches, but am hoping for more specific recommendations based on my specific engine. I am pretty set on duals, but think that the 2 1/4" that Clifford recommended was too big. Thanks for any input ![]() |

Sorry, but the Clifford headers won't fit the 170. The front section will not clear the steering box. Full duals don't make any more power than a proper 2-1 system, duals weigh more and cost more. If you want duals 1 7/8" is plenty. If you don't have a crossover pipe you're going to want pretty quiet mufflers. |

Josh is correct the short headers will hit the bolt on a 225. On my installation had to pull bolt out, countersink the hole and put in a cap screw with a head shaped like a wood screw. Richard |

I have a friend who is good at convincing parts to fit, and I'm running the duals mostly for the sound. The way my engine is set up fits with my goal - just to wake it up a bit from stock. I'm not trying to win any races or anything. It's just a fun cruiser, and if I'm going to have two pipes under the bumper, I believe it should be two pipes from the engine through an X-pipe. |
