Post subject:  Torque converter balance?

Well I am just getting to replacing the broken flexplate on ruster - I will post some pics when I get it removed,

One of the mounting blocks on the converter that bolts to the flexplate broke (weld broke) I will need to re-weld it back on - Do I need to get the converter re-balanced after doing this??

Thanks,

Greg

That sucks. Who built it? They should fix it... Personally, if you weld it right in the same spot, I'd say no need to rebalance. I would worry more about boiling/coking fluid inside the converter when I weld it.

Midwest Built it.

I think the flex plate was broke and I ran it a bit unknowingly and then the mount weld broke and the flexplate broke more.

Only one of the bolts is actually holding the plate to the converter as the the rest of the bolts are there but the plate broke.

Greg,

I'm glad nothing serious happened. I'd weld it and run it. JMO.

Cool Thanks tom, I will not try to go too wild when I lay that weld bead down.

Any idea why this happened? Misalignment of engine/trans axes can do this. Ask me how I know...

Have you tried contacting midland? maybe they will fix it under waranty.I also agree with lou, sometimes the alignment between the engine and trans can be very bad.The engine trans combo in my car was out by 0.035 (0.070 total indicator runout).Even with 0.021 offset dowels it was still out 0.030 TIR twice factory specs, but I used it anyway without a problem yet.If the converter snout is grooved, thats your culprit. Unfortunatly you have to strip the trans to the bare case to check it.ImageImageImage

You will feel vibrations when you rev it in neutral if off alignment. I broke 2-3 flexplates one summer...

I dont really feel any bad vibes when in park / neutral. Of coure the whole car rattles and vibrates when it runs.
