I am swapping the head on my 69 D100. the motor (225) has about 700 miles on it after a almost full rebuild (everything but the pistons and rings was replaced). The valve guides in the head were worse than I thought they were so I am putting on a new head that has zero issues.
the head gasket I used was a Fel-pro that says "use no sealer" I am going to reuse it, should I spray it with the spiffy magical copper head gasket spray or just clean it and put it back on with out the spiffy magical copper head gasket spray?

Also, I know that the question has been answered about the coolant passages that are blocked off by the head gasket I am just wondering why they need to be blocked off?

Buy a new head gasket...

Why, I have reused them before with no problems. I just haven't had ones that say "use no sealer".

All that work and no piston rings, a bad head and now he wants to reuse a head gasket that's only ~$20 I have nothing to say that I think he would hear.

Wasn't really a lot of work, the pistons were fine, it has great compression, didn't burn any oil past the rings and the head was an unknown factor that I figured if it worked great and if not I had a new one on the shelf. Swapping a head on a slant is not a big deal at all and yes a new head gasket IS only $20 but that is $20 I could spend on something else on something more than my truck like parts for my 56 Olds or the 48 Chevy that also has a slant in it.
I have re-used head gaskets in the past with no problems so what would be the point of spending $20 that doesn't need to be spent right now? I bust my ass for my money and don't see the point in spending it when I don't have to.

I would think that since the FelPro gasket has that red elastomer seal at different locations, that a sealer would not stick to it. Also that elastomer, has already taken a "set", and probably won't seal again, especially with a different head. Go ahead and try it, if it doesn't work, the only thing you have to worry about is oil leaking between the head and block, and water in the oil, or the cylinders. Then you can spend the $20, and R&R the head again. To me it is a no brainer.

Yes! Get a new gasket! Really, it's worth the $20. I'm so broke it's not even funny, but that is not a corner I would EVER cut!

If you don't want to buy a new gasket why ask the question?

If you chose to reuse the same gasket, don't put any sealer on it.

Where I live it's $14 for the copper gasket sealer stuff. And since it's not recommended surely you'd just want to be safe and buy the new gasket. Save the time.

But hey each to his own.

I'm showing my age here, but there used to be a commercial where a mechanic said, "You can pay me now, or you can pay me later!"

Meaning, in the context of both the commercial and this thread, you can do it right the first time, or you can cut corners and do it right the second time when the first time fails.

And reusing the same head gasket, it WILL fail!

Last time I took a head off the gasket was baked. In fact after all the pounding and force it took to take the head off, the gasket split in half, some sticking to head and some sticking to block. I know that was after 10's of thousands of miles and you only said 700, but after a few heat cycles I'm not sure the head gasket is going to come out intact.

Each head won't have exactly the same chamber shape. If the fire ring on the gasket squished to match head #1, you may have sealing issues with head #2. No sealant of any type is going to fix that.

If you already got it out in one piece great. If you haven't removed the head and you are anticipating it coming out in one piece, I would make sure local store has some in stock just in case so you don't have to wait for a special order item.

Toss the old gasket in the garbage can.

Buy a new head gasket.

PS: Once a head gasket has been torqued, it's done. Don't even reuse it on the same head and block after pulling it.

Dude!!! I agree with should have done the rings,,you never know..and A new head gasket is always highly recomended, the ports that are bloked in the had gaket is to divert the water to some other ports,,don't mess with it, and if the gasket says ,,,this side up,,,just d exactly that....even if it dosn't mke sense to you,,,,(self experience water boiling all the darn time in one of my old V8!!).

and spend the money$ on the phone call for a free Gasket,,or I will pay for the Call, and the shipping and handlng so the gasket gets to you completelly free.
