I used to be a member some 7 years ago when i owned a 77 volare SW w//6

I own an 80 Aspen 2 door, currently the only upgrades are: 600 Holley, Offy intake, dual headers w/2.5" back, cable type kickdown, and a stall converter (no idea what, bought with it). All smog stuff removed, removed smog pump and A/c pump. I have the Mopar PS cam (244deg 436 lift mild one as i can tell right?), red dual valve springs and new lifters to put in it.

So here is my list of ?s.
1. How easy is it to put these valve springs in and does it need any extra hardware?
2. is there a good place to find a fuel pump plate?
3. currently the engine has a little burp about every 4 seconds, and also likes to surge at lower rpms. Friend thinks it might have a burnt valve causing that.
4. would a 500 cfm eddy performer work better for mileage and power? Currently getting a best of 20 mpg, it also has very odd secondary action as well.
5. I want to shave the head .060, but was wondering the best valve size with current setup + PS installed.
6. Best pistons to go to, would consider boring if suggested.?
7. Transmission has a temperature related problem, no burn't fluid, but as my water heat goes up around 1/4 of the gauge my 3rd gear has problems. I have to find the sweet spot to get it up to 65 and after that it works fine. But if i stop after this and go to take off i don't have any 3rd gear around the middle of the gauge. If I cool the radiator off with a water hose the tranny works fine till hot again.
8. Any other cheap tricks for it...
9. Also live in alliance, nebraska and would like to know of any slant six related people or things around my area...

Marineviper,

Welcome to the site! (again) Sounds like a fun project. You are about 150-200 miles from Mike Jeffrey, Slant head and drag strip record holder extraordinaire. He is near Lexington, NE. Also, turbo66valiant is in SD, but can't remember where. Others are scattered around NE and the area (GunPilot is another one 1.5 hrs further east than Lexington off I80).

If you have not adjusted valve lash, that could be causing your burp, try loosening valves a bit.

Not sure about valve springs unless we get more info. Might need new retainers, but not sure. Also, with that cam, the stock valve springs are more than good enough, unless they are totally shot.

I have seen better mileage with Eddy 500 compared with Holley 600, but this depends on tuning.

Before we discuss other things, maybe you can let us know your goals for the car (1/4 mile time, MPG, driving conditions, budget in near/far terms, comfy full interior and such or ragged edge....)

Best wishes,

Lou

Thanks, and with the springs they are red with no brand on them, and a small inner spring. Figured since they came with the kit to put them on.

I just got done driving it and the secondaries on that holley are so touchy its not funny, 3/4 pedal is about right, but when i floor it, it takes about 3 seconds of a gargling sound than a kick in the seat takes in...new accelerator pump and i was told its got the smallest jets available for it.

As far as goals, i'm just looking at for now mid 13s to mid 14s, keep it a driver (don't like using the diesel in the winter months unless needed). Budget wise short term no more than 1500 short and 3,000 long (might drop a modern hemi in one day and use the slant for an A body). I do plan on keeping a good interior on it...just got new carpet and planning on some buckets. And a new paint job is in store in the next year.

If you're serious about running mid 14s with a 225 in that car you're going to have to get quite serious with the cam, compression, head work, axle ratio, weight loss, etc. Or turbocharge/spray it.

Stock your car ran the 1/4 mile in about 20 seconds. Getting down to around 17 flat is a big improvement and not all that tough to do. The car will still idle nicely and get goo mileage if tuned well. Getting another 3 seconds off the ET is going to take the car from mild to wild. The idle quality will suffer and it's going to be tough to make it nice to drive.

With that little cam you can get away with the stock, low compression ratio. Much more cam duration and you'll need to raise the compression ratio to get decent driveability and regain as much low end torque as possible.

I agree with Lou. Use stock valve springs with that cam. Also, a 600 Holley is too much carb. A Holley 390 or a Edelbrock 500 will do better.

Going 14.0's on all motor in a heavy car is harder than you think. Ryans Dart weighs 3300# with him in it and has not been lightened at all. Full interior, daily driver and it drives fine. But it has ran a best of 14.8 all motor with a lot more cam and head work and gearing than you are talking about. But I think the life saver in having a fast street car is having an overdrive transmission. He has 4.30 gears and an OD and it works great. Your car is probably heavier than his Dart also. His complete build is over in the Virtual drag strip section. Not trying to discourage you. Go for it! :D
