Post subject:  trans not shifting right

Hey all. Background--I just upgraded my 225 with header, 4bbl intake and carb, elec ignition. I'm using a Lokar kickdown cable on my 904 tranny.
Issue--When taking off from a dead stop, the tranny will shift 1-2-3 before i get to 20mph. This makes stop and go driving a PITA. it just seems like an old dog off the line. I can manually shift and it goes good.
It has been suggested that it maybe the kickdown adjustment is off. The way I adjusted the kickdown was--installed the cable. loosely installed the cable stop. moved carb to WOT. After release throttle slid the cable stop back about a 1/2inch and tightened it.
I guess my question is, What is the proper way to adjust your kickdown? All help is appreciated.

With a Lokar you have to open the carb to WOT then adjust the kickdown cable so the kickdown lever on the transmission is all the way back.

No problem. I have had a Lokar on my Ford van for about six years now. No problems and fairly straightforward to install and adjust.

Here are the factory Lokar installation instructions:

I usually add a slotted bracket to the carb end of the Throttle Pressure cable so you can add throttle pressure "pre-load", in order to fine-tune the light throttle shift points.
The slot allow you to have a fix amount of throttle pressure at light throttle openings, once you get deeper into the throttle, the carb linkage peg bottoms-out in the slot and adds mpre T. pressure until full on at full carb open.
It is had to get good light throttle and proper WOT TP with the cable "fixed" at both ends. (Factory TP linkaged usually has a slot at one end of the linkage)

Doc, have you a photo of this slotted bracket?

Item #6 in the image below, shows a factory linkage piece w/ an adjustable slotted end.
With a TP cable, the slotted "slider" end would likely be part of a bracket / bellcrank assembly, that the cable attaches to.
