Post subject:  low compression rods and pistons

hey guys. sorry if this has been discussed already. i have been searching through the threads, but i figured i would just ask. im in the middle of putting a b&m 144 blower on my slant. right now im just making brackets and getting pulleys made. but im also trying to get a parts list together for my engine build. for now i plan on running it on my stock rebuild with about 5 psi of boost, but i would like to build another engine that can take more. i want to run forged rods and pistons, as well as a hotter cam and headwork. i read on here that k1 will make rods to whatever length you want. is this true? if so, what pistons could i get to keep me in the 8:1 compression range? im sure someone on here will know what i need.
thanks,

-aaron-

The stock pistons are pretty strong and will handle 5 psi boost easily if the tune-up is correct. Factory rods are forged. If you actually measure and check the compression ratio of the engine you're building I'll bet you find it comes in a little under 8:1. Before buying expensive rods and pistons I would spend money on a good carburetor and cylinder head work. Pay close attention to the fueling and ignition timing curves or you will burn up or break pistons.

thanks for the info. i plan on running a wideband to get the tuning dialed in, im not sure about timing yet. maybe an msd boost timing controller. i just want to get more power out of it, but keep it dependable. not on the verge of grenading.

A wideband O2 sensor will be good. The MSD BTM will allow you to run a normal distributor advance curve. You'll still need to rework the distributor to limit the mechanical advance so you can run enough initial advance for good idle and low speed performance. Put bigger valves in the head and port it. I'd use 2 1/2" exhaust with a good muffler. Headers would be nice if you can afford them, but the head work is worth more power. Use the Aussie head gasket and torque the head to 75 ft-lbs. If you are patient and don't make too many mistakes you might not blow the head gasket or burn a piston. Maybe.

K1 only has one rod length for the slant, and it's the 198 length. They do, however, partner up with Wiseco for pistons, and Wiseco can make forged pistons for nearly any compression ratio.

K1 will make custom length rods. For about $600 as per my conversation with Tom at K1 about a year ago.

I tried to get him to make a set of stock 6.7 length rods and he would not do it.

how about a set of 198 forged rods reconditioned and a new set of 2.2 turbo pistons. How bout them apples. Thanks Ron Parker :D

campbell enterprise will make you custom made pistons to any compression you want for about 700 bucks. i'm getting a set made now to get me 11.1 comp.

I agree with Josh,I'm running 12 lbs of turbo boost with OEM 1972 pistons.Shaker 223 & Turboram have went 20+ before having problems. If your block and pistons are good enough for a re-ring,and you've never tuned a forced induction engine before, you might be better off to "start small"and gain experience.Even the best pistons and rods will be ruined if your first tuning is way off.

thanks for all the advice. i just put this engine together last year. it has 7,000 miles on it. im also planning on installing a wideband meter to make sure i dont run it lean. i just dont know what to do with timing yet.
