Hello Folks! New guy here and at his wits end. I have a 1976 United Tractor warehouse tug that runs a slant, 727 with the kickdown locked. The motor was stuck when I got it but with a bit of work got it loose and turning. It originally had a cast iron intake and 1bbl but the carb was shot, was in the right junk yard at the right time and scored a 2bbl and aluminum intake. It runs good, has some blow-by but it was stuck after all! The problem is that the old beast sticks valves and bends push rods. It has been running for a couple months now, and is ok if it gets run every day. But leave it for a couple of days and there goes another push rod. I have an 83 hydraulic lifter motor that needs a rebuild, was there any difference in the bellhousings? Maybe get the 83 running and rebuild the 76? This thing is a blast to drive around, raps through all three gears in seconds and does about 25mph....enough to scare the stuff out of you. Suggestions? Thanks Terry |

Terry Might run some Risoline (SP) thru the top end and see if it cleans the guides out. As for the later engine everything should bolt right up.. Im all for rebuilding the 76 as I believe its a better engine and it has the plug tubes. Frank |

The 83 hydro engine will bolt right-in, no problem except for may-be an oil pan / pick-up tube change. As for the sticking valves, this is usually caused by bad fuel. Has the fuel tank been drained & cleaned along with the lines? Once the fuel system is clean, you can mix some top cylinder oil with the fuel to help lube the valve guides. Spraying some penitrating oil into the valve stem, stem seal area while the engine runs will also help desolve any "varnish" build-up down in the guides. DD |

Frank That was my thoughts also because of keeping the original engine with it. You have me on the spark plug tubes though, none on this one. I'm just tired of having to work on it to use it. Heard of Risoline, I'll try it! Thanks, Terry http://www.flickr.com/photos/studebaker-terry/ Yes, the VW carb is gone. It ran good though for seeing if the motor and trans were going to work! T |

Doc: Bad gas was probably it. Have run Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas and oil but still misbehaves. I cleaned the original tank out with Mean Green, about 40 3/4" nuts inside it and turned it in my big lathe. Rinsed and repeated several times, looked clean but gas loosened up some crud the scrubbing left behind. Only ran it for a few minutes until I noticed the gas was brown in the fuel filter, pulled the tank and put back on the "test tank" and clean fuel. Thought I ran it long enough to get the crappy stuff out of the carb.........thats what I get for thinking! Thanks! T Those nuts in the tank sure had my neighbor wondering! |

Another thing you might try is 20% Dexron transmission fluid in the crankcase, and run it for 15-20 minutes after its fully warmed up. It really cleans up the inside with out hurting gaskets etc. |

Well hello, Olaf! I'm not too computer savvy but I did manage to post some pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/studebaker-terry/. These are kind of old.....sorry.....but my camera isn't talking to my PC right now I'm a disabled veteran that just recently became unemployable so going out and buying some big dollar machine is out. I am still a machinist/welder/mechanic and need to have something to take my frustrations out on so this lucky piece of scrap iron got picked from the pile before it got squished. I saw the slant and knew that parts were easy and cheap to get, unlike those popular mini tractors. Thanks for listening to a young old cripple ramble on! Cheers! Terry Nuttyprof: Thanks! I need to change the oil in it anyway so I will get a quart while I'm at it. I'm also going to go with a lighter 5W-20 oil for now, it is just getting run around and not doing any hard pulling. I'll run that for a couple of days and see how it does. Cheers! Terry |

I used that on my first /6. It was a 74 dart with 128000 miles. After I bought it I found out the factory paint still sealed the drain plug, and the filter was still the one the machine put on at the factory! I pulled the valve cover in the vain hope the oil control problem was valve stem seals,, (20 miles per quart) wrong!, and the cover looked like it had been paved with asphalt and notches ground out for the rockers. That stuff was HARD. I put it back together till I could rebuild it, and ran 20% dex. When I tore it down about 800 miles later it was getting 25 miles per quart, had never lost oil presure, and I could shine the inside of the valve cover with a rag! Needless to say the oil came out like tar. However the bearing journals were not scored and even were still standard! |

Woo! Hoo! Got some new pictures downloaded on Flickr! nuttyprof: makes sense, trans fluid is real high detergent stuff. Knock on wood.............I have started the old beast up and ran it every day this week and no bent pushrods! Now if I can get that gas tank cleaned up I will be in tall cotton. Do you know how fast a slant goes through a one gallon tank(test tank)? Cheers! Terry |

Thank you for the pics, Terry. I really like to see all the different vehicles that has got a SL6 in them! Here is a thread with some links to other creative SL6 vehicles. I saw one picture text saying you have too many projects? No, no, no, you have only 'accumulated a substantial number of trade objects'! Olaf |
