I did a search and couldn't find anything, so I'll ask it: Do pushrods care which way they go? I noticed a little "dot" on one end. Does it matter if this dot is up or down? It's on an `83 hydraulic motor. This thing was gunked up beyond belief, so I tried cleaning as much as possible while changing the head gasket. The previous owner said he changed the oil himself, sometimes every year, but mostly just added when it seemed low! BTW, I don't care how strong you are; a cylinder head will not come off until you disconenct the exhaust! |

On the 82 hydraulic motor I just pulled out the dots on the pushrods were on the bottom on some and on the top on others, not sure if this is right either though. |

OK, just wasn't sure if it mattered. I also didn't know if the head bolts mattered if I changed them hole-to-hole. Decided they all look the same and just tossed them into the sonic cleaner with the pushrods. It was funny though; my #3 son came over to help me remove the head from the engine bay and said "Dad, did your engine fall over?" |

Got crappy cellphone pic of the cylinder head. this is the #2 cylinder and was typical for all but #5 and #6, which were much worse. Spraying it all down with oven cleaner and we'll see tomorrow what it looks like. The spark plug electrode is in there somewhere! ![]() But I gotta get this thing finished because it's my daily. After this, clutch is next. When it rains, it pours!

Here's what the cylinders look like after a little Easy Off, Brillo, and water: ![]() Pushrods look even cleaner! this motor is a testament to a good oil change interval! |
