My guess is that there is some warpage or imperfection(s) along the outer edge of the block.
You may want to try using some high temp, oil resistant sealer along that edge.

The problems with my rebuilt engine continue. After having what i thought was a reputable machine shop completely redo my low mileage 75 duster engine i now have a pretty signigicant oil leak around the head on the distributor side. I have had the machine shop retorque the head....no help. Then they removed the head and installed another gasket and its leaking again. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated |

Tube or non-spark plug tube head? Have you confirmed that the leak is at the head gasket "joint" and that oil is not leaking down from SP tubes or the valve cover gasket? At the head gasket... Was the block deck surfaced? Was the head resurfaced? What head gasket was used... steel shim or composit? DD |

Doc -non spark plug tube head -definitely leaking at the head gasket and not the valve cover -block was not decked but when asked they told me it was checked and flat -head was resurfaced -composit gasket used Dean |

What Doc said. The rebuilt motor in my brother's 83 van has the same leak you do from the rear passenger corner between the block and the head. The leak persisted through multiple gasket, three different heads (two rebuilt and milled) and only went away once we put a bit of high-temp RTV sealant on both sides of the head gasket at that point. |

Don't forget the front alternator bracket bolt in the block. It goes into the lifter area, and should get a dab of RTV on it. When it leaks, you will get oil running back along the deck at the head gasket. CJ |

I'm having this problem also. Any suggestions if it continues to leak oil once sealant has been used? Same head and block didn't leak before the head was removed trying to track down a water leak, the only change from before is now the head is held down with ARP studs. Unfortunately the engine still consumes water and I've got an oil leak. |
