Where does the number one spark plug wire go on the distributor cap?

The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4, so that's the sequence, but where does the sequence begin?

TIA

Looking straight down at the distributor #1 will be at about four o’clock.

Once you bring number one cylinder ( first one closest to radiator) up to TDC, the rotor button should be pointing at about four o’clock.

Followed your instructions and the car started right up!

Ran for 15 minutes, then died. Restarted, ran for about five minutes, then died. Restarted, ran for about one minute, then died.

Time to attach a fuel pressure gauge ...

Thanks.

Well that’s a good starting point…LOL

Ran for 15 minutes, then died. Restarted, ran for about five minutes, then died. Restarted, ran for about one minute, then died.

Has this car been sitting, undriven, for an extended length of time?

That; start & quit with shorter & shorter run times each cycle sounds like a fuel delivery problem.

Could be the fuel pump is failing. Check for strong gasoline smells in crank case, and around the fuel pump area.

Perhaps there is an ever thickening clump of crud collecting somewhere between the sock in the tank and the filter at the carburetor.

Blow out the fuel line, change the filter, and lastly if needed freshen up the carburetor with a good cleaning & rebuild.

Bill

I think alcohol blended fuels may have done a number on my fuel system.

Drained the tank and found it contained sticky, muddy crud, which coated the sock/filter. Replaced the tank and the sock. Blew out all the clogged lines.

Found the rubber hoses were clogged and/or swollen nearly shut. Replaced with fuel injection hose.

Replaced the fuel pump and filter.

Car now starts and runs as long as needed.

Job accomplished! Thanks for your help.

On to the next task: replace the distributor which has wobble in the shaft.

Super duper top secret must kill you if I tell you....

It does not matter where #1 is on the cap as long as...

1. Wires are in proper order
2. Rotor points to #1 wire when #1 cylinder is at TDC compression stroke.

The only practical difference it may make is for spark plug wire length / routing.

Yup that is true… However, most people look for hot water on left and cold on right of spout, and FSM is not written in Pig Latin. Convention has its place.
