How often do you guys change the ATF in a drag only car?

I am a bit new to the automatic transmission game in a race car.. so I am asking.

Thnaks,

If I made a lot of runs (100+) I'd change it every year.

I had a trans in my red car that I ran 3 years w/o even adjusting bands.

Your mileage may vary.

I would go with Zilla on this one. Are you running a cooler ? Factory or aftermarket ? Some guys don't, so changes would be more often. I change once a season. You have a deep pan and can run a magnetic plug just like your engine's oil drain plug if you want.

Thanks guys.

I do run an aftermarket type cooler - I need to get a magnet though.

I was over on the H.A.M.B. and found Dolmetsch (Don) had excellent results switching from conventional Dexron to Mobile 1 years ago with a big block Charger drag car. Something about high clutch drum sealing rings. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/show ... ost5792336

3 years so far on the Valiant. Had 100's of runs on the 340 Dart and 440 Charger without a change. Definitely go with a Synthetic! Later

I change the ATF in my 904 approximately every 100 runs. I will also adjust the bands, change in the internal filter, and change the external (add-on) filter. I use only Mopar ATF +4. I have a deep pan, transmission cooler with dedicated electric fan and I monitor the transmission fluid temp with a temp gauge so I can see if there has been a change in the temp from run to run or race to race.

The car is my '69 Dart 340; it ways 3033lbs race ready with me in it. I do all my own transmission work and I usually freshen the transmission when I freshen the engine. The transmission usually looks great inside, I will change the clutches and bands even though I don't have to.

Just some differences between car guys...We seem to be very conscious about how WE care for our cars (Very good thing) And then you have just the opposite. My neighbor and his kids have 5 Mopar drag cars and do NOTHING to them. They sit for months on four flat tires, dead batteries, old fuel, Maybe change the oil every few years, trannies? as long as it moves that's good enough. Never drain the coolant (Pure rust water) etc. You get the picture. The day before a race, scamper around like chickens with their heads cut off cussin' and throwing things, get loaded up late and take off for the track. (This hurts) They never fail to end up in the finals and have been track champions more than I like to remember.....Go figure.

At least they are mopars - - -Romeo, You need to convert them to Slant 6 Mopar racers... I will be happy if they choose to do nothing to Their slanted racers and win track championships!

The first trans that Keith built for me had almost 1500 runs and 40,00 miles on it when I finally had him check it over. He had been after me every season to adjust the bands and change the filter. I never did. Even when I moved it from the Duster to the red car I just added fluid. (Cheapest Type F I could find at Vatozone)

He pulled it apart and put it right back together. It needed nothing.

This is the same trans that is now in the red car with a Griner brake in it. I have never so much as wiped a band in it.

I have run my trans for eight years and probaly 2500 rounds of racing only changed the fulid one time that was when it tore the flexplate into. Put in a new Cox Bros Flexplate and my Trans builder says your good to go. that was four years ago. My trans builder built trans for Me, Dale Rose, Norm Foster .But will build trans for anyone. I have had two trans built for two more Slant racers .Thanks Ron Parker
