I've seen a couple of older Valiants and Lancers ( 1961 and 1962 models ) sporting a later model and much smaller starter motor. I was thinking of replacing my original unit with one of these if someone can tell me what I should ask for at the local parts store.

Lol, a smartass response would "the one that fits" :D but I hear that a 318 starter fits...

Go ahead and save that weird car, the sedan, the 6 cylinder, the C-Body. If you want a big block musclecar and that's all you care about, your missing the point.

When I asked one of the small gear reduction starter owners about his unit he said that it was a popular Chrysler V6 OEM type replacement, Have any ideas on how to narrow it down a bit ?

Edit: $30-$50 at a auto wrecker near you!
Might need to change the connections, but it's easy to do.
The one in my Plymouth has been in there seven years.

The '94 Dakota 5.2 starter had a factory heat shield. Get that too. :D

Just to make sure, does your Lancer or Valiant use the gear reduction starter or is it the early direct drive starter? (Some of the 60-61's got the Direct Drive starter...and you can't replace them with the late starter as the tooth count and pitch on the starting gear is different).

My '78 Volare 225 has a starter for a '93 Dakota with a V6. I got it from O'Reilly Auto Parts, which is my part-time job. 8)

I found that bushing on ebay. Kinda pricey, though. A piece of rubber hose that's snug in the bracket on the throttle shaft will work.
A small hose clamp will keep it from wandering.
