hi,
i just bought a 1981 lebaron with a slant six. i'm pretty sure it has the full lean burn system on it, but i'm new to slant sixes so i'm not positive. it has a one barrel, and i think it's a holley 6145, but i can't seem to find a match to the numbers stamped on it anywhere. i want to know if it's computer controlled. i think it is, by the number of wires going to it, but again, i'm new to this. i have pictures if it will help.

the R number is 5785 B
underneath that the number is 4287014
and underneath that it's 9765 2321

thanks

Pictures will definitely help. The carb will be either a Holley 1945 (non-computer controlled) or a Holley 6145 (computer controlled).

here are some pictures. for some reason the [img] tag isn't working with them. there are a lot of wires under the hood. i want to figure out exactly what kind of lean burn system i have so i can start the process of removing it. the car is running rich right now, and i suspect the lean burn system isn't running correctly, or isn't fully hooked up.

That appears to be a Holley 1945 non-computer controlled carburetor. The wires appear to all go to the bowl vent valve and the idle stop solenoid. This is good. That means that the mixture is not controlled by the computer. You should be able to rebuild your original carburetor and replace the lean burn computer with HEI and a standard electronic ignition. You can leave the bowl vent valve and idle stop solenoid attached since these are actually useful things to have.

You know, taking a second look at those pictures, I could be wrong. Would it be possible for you to post one more picture? I need a picture of the side of the carb closest to the firewall.

Alternatively, here are some scans from a factory service manual that can help you ID the carb you have:

Here is for a Holley 6145 (electronically controlled 1945):

Here is a Holley 1945:

If you click on them they get bigger. I can't tell for certain, but it appears that your carb has a "ported spark tube" next to the PCV fitting. 6145s don't have a ported spark tube, so I suspect you have a 1945. However, a picture of the side of the carb closest to the firewall with special attention paid to where the wires go will settle the matter.

For what it is worth, I don't think you have a lean burn system at all. I see a ported spark advance on the carb and an OSAC valve in the air cleaner, and that suggests to me that you don't have either a computer controlled carburetor or ignition. A picture of the distributor from the top would show if it is computer controlled or not.

thanks for the replies. i'll get another picture later today, but i've been doing more and more research, and you might be right about not having a lean burn system. it just seems like there are way more wires on this engine than on my friend's 84 ram with slant six. i definitely want to do the hei conversion, i just need to keep reading so i don't mess anything up.

Before you go removing wires and hoses willy-nilly, I STRONGLY recommend you get the factory service manual for your car. You do have A/C and lots of various hoses, but the bulk of the hoses are for the EGR system. The EGR system can be disabled, but the rest of the hoses can be cleaned up and replaced to keep everything under the hood in good working order. You need to be sure that every hose is routed to the correct orifice. For example, it appears that you currently have no vacuum advance hose going to your distributor. This hurts performance and fuel economy.

If I were you, I would get a copy of a factory service manual for a 1981 LeBaron and plan on spending several weekends replacing and reconnecting all the hoses and wires under the hood of your car. Don't be tempted to just rip everything out. most of it is helpful and doesn't actually hurt anything. You can reroute wires and hoses to clean up the looks of the engine bay, but the only system I would recommend disconnecting and removing is the EGR valve vacuum amplifier system.

i'll look into a factory manual. and you're right, there are some hoses that should be hooked up to something, but just aren't. i suppose that should be my first step.

Dad had an 82 Gran Fury w/a /6 and it did not have LeanBurn; it was a former "company car" before we had it, was not hacked or modded in any way (that was "my" job, he he he)

non Cali models came that way; so being yours is an 81 I'd bet the same thing in that case.

okay here's some pictures of the back of the carb. sorry it took so long, but the radiator sprung a leak and i've been trying to find one at a reasonable price.
i realized the egr air pump had been disconnected, but the hole on the head wasn't properly filled, so now i'm in the process of getting a proper block off for that hole. i intend to remove the whole egr system after that, i just need to figure out exactly what need to be plugged/ removed. also, i took your advice and ordered some shop manuals off ebay, and they should be here in a few days.
