Post subject:  broken thermostat ?

I recently was pulling out some hair trying to diagnose multiple problems at the same time = one of them being the car not getting up to operating tempature in a reasonable amount of time.

found - my thermostat was stuck open - and looks like what ever was inside melted out of it like a little blob of aluminum bit.

never had that happen before - if anything ive had them stick closed.

ive got a autozone replacment part in there now. but is there a "best" brand of thermostat to use ? and should I replace it with the 195 thats in there now or should I look for something in the 180 range ?

o its a 72 225 if that matters

The Stant SuperStat is a very popular thermostat for many members of this forum. 180° F is stock for all /6, as far as I know. Some people in the colder regions often run the 195° F thermostats during winter and a 180° F or so during the summer. There are a few other choices, but that is the popular one.

It is also recommended to boil your thermostat before use. This is done to ensure it opens around the correct temp rating and also to ensure it opens/closes quickly.
