 Post subject: Big Red Runs!
PostPosted: Wed Aug 21, 2002 6:24 pm
After 12 straight days and 100's of hours of work - would it run? The crank sensors were seeing the magnets. The fuel pressure gage showed 35 psi. All the fluids were up. The belts, fan and blower tubes looked to have clearance. Would the blower belt stay on?
I turned the key on. The pump primed. I twisted over to start. It turned over but no firing. I twisted the injector duty cycle up. I cranked again and it caught! It was jerky and ragged but the dam thing runs!! The belts stayed on. No fuel spraying about the engine compartment. It responds to the gas pedal. Tomorrow I start programing but tonight I'm taking the rest of the night off. I'm cracking open some bubblies!

Great news Al, be sure to give us a "test drive" report.
Cheers!

Congratulations, Al. Wish you could attach an audio file so we could all hear it!

Al,

That's awesome. I hope the tuning is rewarding and it goes like skunk!

Post subject: Big Red Tuning - Day 1
PostPosted: Thu Aug 22, 2002 8:58 pm
A day of discovery
- the TBird throttle pressure cable a relatively easy retrofit to the 904 TF
- my vacuum activated blower bypass valve has a slight leak and 15 inches of vacuum doesn't keep it open (it whistles and loads blower at idle). Added a fairly soft spring to assist keeping it open.
- Timing: Something is strange with the timing marks. I've put a 80's crank pulley/damper on the 1960 crankshaft. It appears as if the TDC mark is off by 120 degrees. Between the markings for the 4 magnets and my 2 TDC paint lines, it looks like a colored pinwheel!
- Timing: I used MSD wires (low resistance/high EMI sheilding) along with the GM coil packs. Inductive timing lights don't "read" the spark coming thru. Ended up picking up the signal from the coil power wire but get 2 extra flashes per cycle.
- Programing: So far, the SDS system has been easy to use. I'm still learning but its fairly intuitive.
- Driving: Around 6:00 pm, took a short drive to a friends house. Programmed more accelerator pump. Pedal response does seem crisper. I've added a stiffer spring to the blower valve to isolate the tuning just to the EFI system and ignition for now.
- Tomorrow: more on the road programming and begin adding blower. With 36 lb injectors, duty cycle staying below 20%. Time to bundle up wires. It appears that I got them right. To end the day, time for a wash and vacuum. Show on Saturday calls for clear blue skies and 80'F.

Sounds like all systems are a "go".
Man, I love getting a new car or engine "dialed-in and ready a week before a big car show or race! This stuff give me goosebumps. (and some other hard to discribe feelings!!)

Be sure to keep taking pictures, I want to see one of the car at the show with a big crowd of "wide eyed" people around it.
