Can anyone suggest a good engine block heater for my Slant 6 Valiant. Thankyou |

There are several types of block heaters: dipstick; water jacket via freeze plug or lower radiator hose, and some that attach with a magnet to the oil pan… I can’t say which one you desire, or need, that will be up to you to decide. What I can say is; where you live in Sothern Ohio, why do you need an engine heater? If your car is properly tuned up, has a good high cold cranking amp battery, a properly operating choke, and correct weight engine oil it should fire right up without any heating device well into the -20’s. I can say this, because I have never used such a device, nor my father and siblings during the last fifty years or so of Maine winters once we owned 12 volt cars. (6V jobs were a different can of worms during winter starting…PIA) Our cars always sat out well into the late seventies, and always started, with the exception of when a battery decided to take a crap at the end of its life. I would spend my money on a good tune-up & battery. After all, how are you going to plug in your car at the mall? |

No problems with tune or battery. Valiant starts fine, properly working choke, 0w30 amsoil synthetic and red top optima here...but I have been spoiled with newest car purchase '09 Challenger RT and have experimented with its engine block heater. We have been experiencing consistant sub freezing temps and the quick interior heat in the early morning has been very welcomed....just wanted to spread the love to the Valiant.... |

My 2 cents-get a freeze plug type. Stronger mount than a spliced heater hose and the magnetic one may fall off if you hit a big enough pot hole. |

I use a tank type Kats that mounts in the heater hose. You want one that circulates the coolant. When you jump in the car and start it the cooling system and heater core are already hot. You can hop in and drive. A freeze plug type just warms the coolant in the block, a dipstick and magnetic type just warms the oil. I'm not sure what model it is as I'm at work. I'm thinking it is a 1500 and they call for a 1300 for my Aspen. I bought mine for $5.00 at a thrift store. |

If you are warming the water in the block you are warming about 70% of the water. The ones that warm the water to the heater may not work well if your car has a vacuum operated heater valve. No vacuum with engine off and heater valve will be closed blocking the flow of water. |

I got one installed on the water heater line and it is always nice and toasty first thing in the morning. |

I personally use a tank type block heater on my D150. It is connected to the block drain for the inlet to the heater and returns to the head next to the coolant temp sensor. It is thermostatically controlled. It brings the coolant to a certain temp and cycles on and off to keep it there. It works very well, start it up and instant heat. It takes about 30 min to heat a cold engine. Cliff N |
