I have been reading several recent threads on the Engine page regarding combustion chamber design, timing events, cam shaft theory, and compression ratios, which has piqued my interest in the theory side of engine building. Do any of you have preferred books covering these topics that you could point me to. I have a copy of Mopar Performance Parts; “Six Cylinder Engines†which is a good practical guide to our slant six, but I’m looking for more of this kind of [url=http://www.popularhotrodding.com/tech/0311_phr_compression_ratio_tech/index.html]stuff[/url]. One or two reference books is a lot easer to deal with than a bunch of web articles. Bill |

Although written for "general" performance theory David Vizard's books will help you understand a lot of the why's and how's..."How to Build Horsepower Vol.1" is a very good start (found a used copy at a local book store for 1/2 the new price...)...need to pick up a copy of Vol.2... Hot Rod used to have a good book that compiled all their old articles on Camshafts, most of the "new tech" in the book is dated, but the theory and dyno comparo of camshaft advances/lobe separation still holds for all the 4 cycle infernal combustion family. -D.Idiot |

Then you need a 1987 Truck/Van Factory Service Manual and that will have all your rebuild info and specs for your vehicle and engine.-D.Idiot |

I have that book. It seams to be light on theory, and heavy on tried and true Direct Connection parts combinations from the past. I think the aftermarket has progressed since its slant six chapter was written. This is not to say if one follows their outlines for a particular build, it won’t work. But, reading SlantSix dot org leads me to believe the slant six’s performance development is still progressing. Thanks for your reading list Josh, this is what I was looking for. Bill |

This is not to say if one follows their outlines for a particular build, it won’t work. But, reading SlantSix dot org leads me to believe the slant six’s performance development is still progressing. It makes a good coffee table reader...but the cams are now long gone (and a few board members have had oil gear troubles from MP cams in the past)... Best rebuild specs/info found in the factory manual (if forged crank a 1976 manual can occasionally be seen on Ebag for $6...if cast crank/mech lifter a 1978 manual is in the same realm...if wanting the paper book.) Once you go Hipo, this board, the search function and a few books as mentioned by Josh will see you through . -D.Idiot |
