are any OE harmonic balancers worth using? or did they all have bonding issues? the one in question is from an 85 truck

At this age and time you have to check to see if the timing mark lines up at true TDC and hope that it stays there. If you want a direct replacement the Aussie Powerbond damper is a nice piece and is priced quite reasonably.
