first off the heater in my duster does work, however i can not control its direction and its temperature is very low for any heater. what could cause this other than the core being clogged up, since i dont believe thats the problem but i could be wrong. next, i know its winter but summer wont take too long around here and this is to be my daily driver so i need my ac to work, but i cant get my compressor to even turn im sure it needs to be recharged and freon added but i dont want to damage the compressor since its very expensive for a new one. |

Most likely, you do not have vacumm to the control head. look in the engine compartment to see if there is a small black hose coming through the fire wall. it should hook up to the vacumm "tree" on the number six intake manifold runner. If this is hooked up, then check under the dash to make sure it is connected to the control head. It is possible the control head is bad, also. |

Another possible reason for low heat is the gaskets on the various air control doors internal to the heater box are bad and not sealing well enough to prevent cross flows. And or, there is a bunch of crud preventing those doors from fully closing, or have blocked air flow through the heater core. When I replaced my leaking heater core, that heater box was full of crap, and every gasket was degraded to dust. It was a mess. |

ok there are 2 hoses coming out of the firewall both have vacuum but why would the air temperature be so cold i already replaced the switch with a plug to make water run into the core at all times until i can get the switch replaced. |

i flushed the heater core and whole coolant system and replaced with new anti-freeze. the heat is working better than ever but i dont have controll of the vents i can only turn it to a/c with the temperature on heat. |

I can't tell if you mean the vents only blow out hot air or if the air only blows out of the floor heater ducts. Depending on the A/C package in your car, the air temperature blend door and the air direction door in the vent system may be controlled by vacuum operated diaphragms or by cables. It sounds like you have a system where the door operation is controlled by vacuum and either the control head has failed, the hoses have failed, the hoses have come disconnected, the diaphragm on the door has failed, or the door has rusted in place. To truly diagnose and repair this problem, you must first identify what type of A/C system is installed. Dealer added? Factory installed? Some other aftermarket system? Various systems were used in the 70s and could be ordered from dealers, each with different means of controlling the A/C and where the air came out of the vents. Once you identify what kind of A/C system you have you MUST get the factory service manual for your Duster and use it to diagnose and repair the problems. If you could post some pictures of your dashboard and tell us what year your Duster is we might be able to help you more. Also, pictures of the vacuum hoses under the hood and what you have done to the hoses going to the heater core would help. |

the vents only blow from the normal a/c vents ill have to make photo bucket and post pics unless there is an easier way. i have the controls for max a/c, a/c, vent, heat, defrost the only one that blows air is the 2 a/c settings. i turn the temperature to heat and have warm air. i bypassed the valve allowing coolant into the core since it is clogged and does not work right, with a straight connector allowing coolant in at all times. i need my defrost to work but nothing happens when i turn the switch. |

I believe some of those cars had a vacuum can under the hood; I've seen them rust out and leak badly. |

Sounds like you have factory A/C. Seems to me that if you had a vacuum line off, or a bad vacuum canister (if so equipped), that the car would run lean when the selector switch was placed in non functional areas. You would also hear a hissing sound. Give us some history, how long have you had the car? Have these settings ever worked? Does the car run differently when the selector is put in a non functional spot? Does the air output under the dash change in volume when you change the selector? ~RDE~ |

i aquired the car 4 years ago when i was 14. the temp controlls have always been problematic. if i take all vacume away from the hoses the defroster blows air if i connect the hoses it changes to the vents. there is no noticeable change in the idle when i change the controll settings. the vacume canister is bad and i have bypassed it. it is factory a/c, it has a all in one square piece under the dash, although i finnaly got my compressor to spin so i know its not froze up, i cannot find the factory wire for it. i should get pics later today on here. |

There should be a rubber vacuum manifold plug (sorry, can't remember what it is called) located under the dash behind your control head. This routes your vacuum to the proper door depending on control head selection. These plugs are known to become brittle and crumble into pieces. It has been covered on this website but I don't know where. I posted a thread on it also if you can find it. EDIT: Here was my thread that fixed my problem. http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=42451 |
