Well, after taking it out and rechecking every little thing again Re-installed it and it fired up. Now the only thing is that when I rev it up it acts like it's starving itself to death? oh - and as a prime example of my luck ---- I ran it up my driveway a little then stopped and decide to walk around it and see what the exhaust looked like etc. - I found that for some unknown reason, the gas line going from the inlet to the tank decided to come loose and start pouring gas on the gravel!! that's life in the fast lane for ya! hahaha okay well now for tuning it in - which this thing does not do well at all later, dan |

Oh. Wow. Well, that should work good at the strip! That's a lot of carburetor for the street in your van. I'd think a 350 cfm model would be a bit more tractable. Glad you got it working! ![]() Merry Christmas! CJ |

17 something was the best I got outta it at the Redding drag strip between - throttle cable breaking and this carb not having much adjustment to it I was not able to break past the 17's oh - and no kick down linkages - I have the 727 wired at half way on the linkage - been driving it that way for 5 or 6 years now something that may have a bearing on what ya'll think of this carb - the "idle adjustment screw" - is all the way compressed - and it does not do a thing - in or out - anyway, at this point I have to try and just get it back to where it at least ran well enough to feel trustworthy again - which translates into - driving it when and where I want damn it!! Used to run into San Fran and have a blast flying up the hammer lane on the way out of there! if I can find a 390 I would like to try it - but haven't had much luck finding one - IN MY PRICE RANGE!!! LOLOL HAHAHA - sorry, inside joke later d |

Dan- I hate to say it, but I think you should find yourself a different carb. Running without a kickdown is not only bad for the transmission but it will kill your performance and mileage as well. My offer on a 2280 stands, and here are some options on eBay. I truly doubt you need the 500 CFM rating, and I think you would likely be happier with a smaller carb. BBD Holley 2245 |

If the idle screws do nothing you have passages blocked in the carb, and probably a vacuum leak somewhere.

If you have the idle speed adjusted too high because the timing is off, the idle mix screws may do nothing. If you Crank them in hard enough they can deform and always be rich......even cranked in. Get a BBD...it will put you in the `16s. Holley is for wreathes. |

Those older 500 cfm carbs came on V8's, so the bleeds and emulsion tubes are designed around that flow. Your throttle plates are probably open a bit too far for the idle circuit to work. Put a bit more initial timing in, and see if you can close the throttle plate down a bit more. once the transfer slots are masked, the idle bleeds will start doing something. Let me dig around in my stuff and see if I still have a 350. It's still going to be a monster, but will be much easier on fuel. The 500 CFM I have has a 50cc pump shot to get things rolling, and it doesn't cruise worth a darn on my 250" Slant. I ran into a guy running one on a 300 six. Went like a scalded cat, but he had the same cruise gremlin. You can move it around, but you can't get rid of it with such small engines. The 5200 Reed is talking about would be a much more ideal setup. CJ |

Holley 4412 500 cfm Primary Metering block 134-137 Jets that came in it were 73's. 28 shooter Power Valve was 5" HG. Holley Rebuild kit number 37-474 Trick kit 37-933 For reference. The power valve and pump cam etc will need to be changed out if the carb is still carrying what came in it. Any time the idle speed adjustment is changed on these carburetors, the pump cam adjustment must be made. If it's too tight, these carbs can jam in the WOT position. This is the older pump lever style. Don't skip the pump cam adjustment! ![]() CJ |
