Oh man. I was just doing a valve lash adjustment and something bad happened. It's not my first time doing it, maybe 4th or so, but after some minor adjustments to the 1st and 2nd cylinder exhaust valves, I started hearing pinging and clanking going on inside the engine. I'm not sure what it means and it scares me profusely. It's now constant and I'm afraid to fire it back up.

If I remember correctly, it started while loosening the exhaust valve on cylinder 2. If anyone can help and tell me what I have just done I would appreciate it.

if it makes you feel any less embarrassed i accidentally dropped my zippo into the engine bay, it rode the k member down and sat, open, lit, under the oil pan. quiet scary.

good lighter though.

i keep a fire extinguisher in the car.

Once, while adjusting the valves on my brother's van, I dropped the 3/8 wrench into the running motor. Talk about a sphincter puckering moment. Fortunately, the design of the slant six is such that a wrench dropped into the lifter gallery will most likely just make scary noises but not cause any damage.

Hello,
krytellan, I have a friend who happens to live in Detroit, and enjoys getting information from reluctant people.
Is it OK for him to call and meet with you tomorrow?

regards,Rod

P.S: 2 things, we would all like to know what the problem with your engine was and here is a picture of my friend so you will recognise him when he meets you.

Geeze guys. Now he has to admit the 3/8" socket fell off his rachet, and that was making all the noise!

How embarrassing!

What I like is when I get too close to the rocker next to the one I'm working and scrub all the skin off my knuckles.

I can't count how many times I have been adjusting the #1 rockers and somehow manage to touch one of the alternator diodes or "hot" post with my grounded wrench...
hey, it's getting close to the 4th of July... I see sparks!  :x

I have always tried to idiot-proof my tools when doing a lash adjustment.

I use a Long extension on the 3/8" ratchet which keeps it away from the back of the alternator and I use some old scraps of old household solid electrical wire wrapped around the ratchet handle, extension and Tape the 3/8" socket to the extension so it does not fall into the engine..

Of course doing valve 'justments on lumpy cammed race type motors is where these extremes are needed. docile stock stuff that will idle smoothly @ 650 rpms is easy..

krytellan,

Love the '80 F body Wagon.
It does not appear to be a sport wagon is it?
