Post subject:  Whistle noise

Hi
Ive had a problem with a whistling noise coming from what sounds like the base of the carb, the carb is a 1920 and I recently rebuilt it.
I dont know what the problem could be..
Have any ideas?

A vacuum leak! :D

What do I win?

Double check for any hoses that might have been left off. Make sure the carb hold down nuts are tight still. Sometimes they come loose after a heat cycle or two. (That goes away after retightening.)

Spray a little carb cleaner at the base of the carb. If the engine speed changes, you have a leak.

Would you like some crumpets with Your tea-kettle?

There are few spots that will do this on a 1920. Most common for me has been the little pipe that extends out on the driver side which hooks to a hose for the choke pull-off diaphragm. The pipe itself gets looe or has a crack in it which causes a small leak and subsequent whistling noise.

Try the carb cleaner around the carb, and also spray you manifold to head ports on the intake.. I had a whistling noise there too. There is also the possibility of the choke pull-off diaphragm being bad too. Even with a leak, they may still function normally.

My Carter BBD is doing the same thing.
After checking a few things i noticed my throttle shaft has a little bit of movement in it,when i moved it a bit the whistling stopped, when i let it go the whistling started again.
I will take it off one day and get the shaft holes in the base of the carb sleeved/rebushed.
Did you do this when you rebuilt it ?

Haha all of you guys win haha

The sound comes from the little pipe like Thor said and I knew it was a leak Ceej haha
And bucket 656 sounds like hes having the same problem as me because when I get up to speed there is no noise until I come to a stop then it squeels again.
I have no idea which of the problems it is though, I changed the gasket at the base of the carb today to make sure thats not the prob and of coarse it runs fine for ten minutes getting my hopes up :D then whistles again :o haha its very annoying..
The throttle shaft may be the problem but Im not sure.. The choke vacuum pipe seems fine but I will inspect it for cracks or looseness 2maro...

It is generally internal. Put a plug on the base side of that pipe and remount the Carb. Start it and see if it goes away.

So just completely bypass it? wouldnt that mess with the choke and not allow it to open as much..
When I plug up the pipe from the outside it still whistles.. How would I be able to plug it from the inside, wouldn't the vacuum suck the plug into the manifold?

It would be a test to make sure that its the tube that is leaking. Another option is to simply turn the base gasket around so that there is no hole under the port. If the whistle goes away, that's the leak.

It is basically bypassing the choke pod, but you could run a hose to the vacuum tree on the #6 runner to keep the choke pod hooked up.

Bucket 656 takes the prize haha I flipped the gasket around and that whistle noise still existed, so i sprayed some carb cleaner on the throttle shaft and the idle went up, I wiggled the shaft a little and the noise stopped, it hasnt done it for a few days now so im jst not gonna touch it for a while haha
Thank you very much guys :)
