Heavy, as in size and pounds.

Howdy, would this be early stock or aftermarket?

I opened up an old three plug block I have for the next engine for my Toad wagon. Three things struck me as odd.

First was the crank. I don't have another crank handy for direct comparison but this crank looks heavy visually. A pattern maker by trade, I can usually trust my eyes.

Second was the cam, clearly heavy. I do have a few stock and aftermarket cams out and they all measure around 1.030" for the shafts. The one I pulled from this block measures 1.260" at the shaft.
The lift is .234" on evenly worn lobes, suggesting a stock profile. The lobe and heel are .692" and .458" though, larger than what I've seen before but consistant with the shaft size. This cam weighs close to 10 lbs, vs the 7 of my others.

The third seeming anomaly was the fitting of dumbell lifters rather than full solids as I've seen in other stockers. Rebuild, perhaps?

Nothing else appears odd at first glance. The cam bearing sizes are normal, all else seems normal.

I read the corneer stamping but I know little of that info. It's T22 3 22 2, with that spacing.

So, early or odd? What say you? :?

Early and somewhat odd... compaired to the more "common" SL6 stuff most people use these days.

I have seen a number of the heavy cranks and cams, most come out of 1960 / 61 engines.
I always wondered why the engineers thought these parts had to be that heavy in the original design and first engines built...
(Used as a "safety margin", in a time when steel and gas was cheap?)

As for the "dumb-bell" shaped lifters... it seems like most of the factory solid lifters used in the 60s and early 70s were that shape.

Initial "overkill" in the original developement, and backed off later? Sounds likely.

I must've been getting rebuilds then, in my other engines, to have a preponderance of full bodied lifters.

Thanks for the info, I think the heavier crank'll be OK in the Toad wagon as it's mostly for towing and hauling (think "pick up truck, with a built in camper shell" ). The cam'll be after market though, so the lighter one.
