If a 180* thermostat is stock, would a 195* thermostat be better? If so why?

I keep hearing that the 195* is the best to use, however I'd just like to know the how and why behind it.

At higher temperatures, efficiency improves. Better sealing means better power, and higher fuel economy. Atomization of fuel is more complete at higher temperatures. The temperature is still low enough that coolant doesn't boil. Some of the newer engines run much warmer than that.

That's the short of it.

180 was stock for many decades (160 if you used a alcohol based anti-freeze) until smog/emissions became a issue and they went with the 192/195. Bonus of the 195 is it will keep the engine from over heating a little better by slowing down the water going through the radiator. And the hotter you can run a engine the more power and economy.
