Well I'm on a severely tight budget since I'm getting married in a few weeks. However I was able to scrounge up some cash to make my Valiant more presentable.

I know it's kinda hard to see...but the roof was black...The genius who owned the car before me thought it was a good idea to paint the roof with house paint.

The verdict? I'm extremely pleased with the results stemming from a 4" foam roller, rustoleum oil based paint and mineral spirits for under $50. Wherever I go I get compliments on my Valiant and how nice it looks. No it's not a show car, no I don't care to have it look like one...It's nothing personal but I kinda have a life and don't feel like spending all this time and effort into a paint job that's going to require SO MUCH upkeep.

I haven't even buffed it out yet.

I spent a grand total of about 10 hours on it. The longest part of it was painting the trim around the doors.

Speaking of trim, I'm pretty pissed off that someone stole the tail trim panel that says "PLYMOUTH" on it last night and now I can't find another one ANYWHERE and it makes me want to kill someone.

The hardest part of this whole paint job was being patient.

My soon to be mother and father in law thought I was insane after they saw the 1st coat...Ironically I kept patience by singing "Keeping the faith" by Billy Joel (Even though I hate that song.) in my head.

All you need is odorless mineral spirits and a few cans of Rustoleum gloss paint, a 4" high density foam roller, some good tunes to listen to and patience.

I'll throw out a few pointers:

#1. You're supposed to thin the paint down with half Rustoleum and half mineral spirits. I did that for the 1st few coats and found out I was wasting my time. The paint was running horribly and it wasn't sticking to the primer. I decided to do 80% Rustoleum and 20% mineral spirits and got much better results. I do not know if I had to adjust the mixture because I'm 2500 feet up above sea level or what.

#2. It is IMPERATIVE that when you're rolling on the paint that the little bubbles pop almost instantaneously. If they don't, it's way too thick and plan on bailing out that layer by getting a dry foam roller and rolling it right off. Otherwise you're going to have a heart attack when the paint dries.

#3. Sanding is a WASTE OF TIME. That is the #1 reason WHY 90% of the roll on paint jobs look horrible. Think about it:
-You just put on a coat of paint on your car...Yeah there's a few runs and you don't want runs on your car. So you obviously sand it out right? Yes and no. I was told to use 600 - 800 grit sandpaper for this and it ended up being a disaster. Why? because you're taking a whole layer of paint off in that one section! So now after you sanded off the run, the paint will look uneven in that one spot. So you just wasted a few hours, and now you're going to waste a few more hours because now you have to sand the rest of the car to make the paint look even because you can't just "retouch" that one area...You're going to see paint lines, and no it won't go away with the next coat.
ELIMINATE THE INCLINATION TO SAND! All you have to do is TAKE YOUR TIME. Take the car panel by panel if you have to! I'm serious! Get a comfy chair, put on your favourite music and TAKE YOUR TIME! For example; you're on your 3rd coat and you're painting the driver's side front fender and you notice some runs. All you have to do is lightly go over it with your roller and voila! The run is gone! You have about 20-40 minutes of time after the initial application of paint to check the paint for runs until it's too late and the drying process kicks in. Thus I would suggest working in a well lit area to throughly make sure that your paint isn't running. The only time I would sand is for the final coat to reduce the orange peel look or if dog fur gets stuck into the paint. Thus I would use 2000 grit sandpaper and wet sand the peel off.

4. DO NOT PAINT IN TEMPERATURES BELOW 60 DEGREES. BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN I still need to finish my trunk because I painted it in 40 degree weather.

5. If you can not paint with a paint brush, do NOT attempt a roll on paint job. YOU WILL WRECK YOUR CAR. Paint the car like Bob Ross would paint his "Happy trees". I'm not joking, a calm relaxed approach with a light wrist produces the best results. The harder you push the roller, the more the paint lines are prevalent and there will be very prevalent orange peel.

6. It takes about 12 hours for the paint to fully dry. Don't touch it with your fingers before that 12 hour threshold to see if it's done or you'll have a fingerprint mark on the paint.

It sounds scary, but I wish I had this advice before I undertook my project. Instead of the honesty I dished out, I got a "Rah-rah-rah" attitude which made me extremely uncomfortable. If you can be gentle and patient, you'll start to love the results of the paint after the 3rd coat.

I used Rustoleum Hunter Green. Slant Six Bob, I would suggest "Safety Red" or "Sail Blue" for your Scamp. Make SURE it's GLOSS and not SATIN or FLAT!

Nice color. I like the green with the tan interior, thats what i have. I have the same wheels on my truck. Ive been thinking about painting my truck a dark blue maybe. im not sure though.

What kind of Volvo do you have? Is it the famous 200 series?
