Post subject:  Crank trouble
Bought a 78 volare with a blown 225 in it, bought what i thought was a 68 225 out of a a100, went to bolt the transmission up and the pilot size on the crank is smaller than the nose on the torque converter, i was told pre 68 225 had a smaller pilot size, im stuck with the engine any way around this, i already tried to lathe the converter nose down but that didnt work ?

Doc has had cranks bored out to fit the '68+ torque converters, but of course this means an engine tear-down. The '78 crank will not fit the earlier block. About the only other thing to do is have a custom torque converter made or put a '66-'67 transmission in the car.

yeah i was looking for a 66-67 transmission but i cant find one, the other idea i had was if i got a 66-67 torque converter and brought it to a transmission shop if they could split the converter and weld the front onto the 78 converter? idk if there the same size though

I have the same problem, I have a rebuilt engine with a 67 crank and I only got a 65 wire tranny that fits, my idea was to get the oilpump, inputshaft with front clutch housing from the 65 and put it in a 68 tranny (66-67 trannys are hard to find here also), but I am not 100% sure it will fit.

I getting ready to do a swap of my own but before I do I have a question on this supject how can I look at the eng I have on the stand to see if it will fit my 62 valiant transmission and or will the torque converter from my 67 engine fit in the 62's transmission?

The change was made in 1968 so your 67 engine should fit the 62 tranny.

up to 1967 the pilot ring at the end of crank is 1.962" in diameter, 1968 and up it got larger 2.157", so this must match the nose on the converter.

It is possible to fit a pre 1968 tranny to a 1968 and later engine with an adapter ring, and it is even possible to modify a 1968 and later tranny/converter to fit an old engine, but that require more work.

Tranny and converter must come from the same border of 1968 because the input shaft and number of splines are different before/after 1968.

Say I do end up with a post 68 crank what will I have to do to get it to work on my 62 transmission? this is a push button transmission so what to stay with it

To reduce the size of the large pilot crank, purchase & install an adapter ring.
Note: In the photo below, the crank on the left is a "small pilot" crank that has been machined-out to the larger size.
There is an adapter ring sitting on the bench, between the 2 cranks shown.

Is the outer diameter of the ring the same? For manual transmission cars is there any consideration need for the flywheel or pilot bushing? TIA

The OD of the crank ring changed along with the ID. There is the same '67 and older, '68 and later break for flywheels. The pilot bushing did not change, but not all drilled cranks were finish reamed to size. There is a smaller OD pilot bushing in case the crank was drilled, but not reamed. There is also a roller bearing available which fits the '68+ crankshafts.
