| Post subject: | Fresh air duct rot |
I have a 64 Valiant that I am restoring. Where the fresh air ducts attach to the body, just behind the hood, there is significant leakage due to rot where the flange is. Does anyone know if there is an insert or other type of fix for this. I do not want to block off the vents because the only easy way to do that is to do it from above which will look like hell. I will fabricate something if I have to but if there is a product that does this for me I would like to know..thanks for any replies...Mark |

Rot? Or rust? On which component? I'm guessing that you mean the metal itself. Is it just leakage, or does it compromise the mounting surface integrity? Photos would help. If it's just leakage, here are some ideas Quick and dirty: Aluminum tape. Restoration: Section, replace and weld. In between: Fiberglass, epoxy, or pop-rivet a patch in place. |

Not aware of any product. All the people I have ever talked to repair this common problem by cutting the top of the firewall off and repairing this from the top. |

Did not know there was a difference in rot and rust but if so it is rust. The flange where the air duct attaches is pretty much gone. Doing the repair from under the dash seems to be the only way to get to it without taking out the windshield and cutting the top out and then replacing. Hard to get a good pic from underneath but I will give it a try. I am considering a combination of epoxy and turning down a piece of pvc pipe for the duct to attach to. As I said before, if there was an insert made to go inside I would do that...Mark |
