I have a 80 d150 833od, I have been messing with the belts all day, I have a high pitch squeal screech that I can get for moments as I rev it up I have to rev it up pretty hard like above 2500rpm and if I do it slowly I don't get the sound. the sound is much worse driving (more load). I took off the belts one by one and thats how I found out it wasn't the belts. I took off the air cleaner to try and get a closer listen and its almost like its coming from down the throat of the carb. I've rebuilt the carb about 7 months ago and I had rebush the shafts its the stock 1brl 1945. I've done the typical spray down with cleaner looking for vac leaks with no luck, I've resealed my vac tee with teflon tape check my vac lines and they are still in good shape I changed them all when I did the carb. I really have to get the worked out as its my only driver and and I have to work on sunday. it sounds exactly like a fan belt when your on the road driving, I was thinking maybe it my clutch but I don't smell any thing (its 6months old when I did the 4speed swap) doesn't seam like its slipping but I tend to let off the gas when its squealing. My vac cab in the truck is about as same as is always was about 17-18 at idle and goes to almost nothing if I have my foot in it. I"m going to but a mech stethoscope tomorrow to see if I can narrow it down . any help would be greatly appreciated

Do you have power steering? Did you check the belts for glazing? Have you tried tightening or loosening the belts to change the squeal? It can be a dry bushing/bearing (water pump-pilot bushing) Start by eliminating items (remove belts will eliminate belts-alt-water pump Air pump A/C )

yes I do and I tried removing the p/s belt. problem still there, then I tried removing alt/waterpump belt sound still there.

Have you checked the vacuum line to the power brakes, and also the power brake unit?

When you let off the gas that should make the sound change by increasing the vacuum if it is vacuum related. Does it matter in which gear you are in? Does it do it in park/neutral? Have you tried the PCV valve? And finally -did you check for leaks at the head/manifold gasket?

I have checked the pcv valve I pulled it out and ran it and I could still get it to make the sound. I haven't checked the booster Ill pull off the hose and plug it with vac cap. I can get it to do it reving up barely or at the peak of rpm (i don't want to blow the motor) but its way worse driving any time I have to give it any kind of gas to go up a hill or accelerate other than cruise (above 2000 mainly) it does it in all gears clutch in or out.

Check the front pulley/dampener.


I've seen where the outer portion has slipped on the rubber ring and hits the timing cover.

I checked that when I thought it was the belts I even installed the big crank bolt that wasn't there as I've been meaning to.

When this clutch was done,was a new throw out bearing used? They can sometimes squeal really loud when they are starting to fail.
You can usually make it change pitch by depressing the clutch pedal while the squeal is happening. my 2 cents.

if this is an automatic engine, mated to ur manual trans, it may be the pilot shaft adapter bushing is dry enuff to squeal.

If it is more noticeable under a load maybe its the vacuum advance unit? Have you unplugged it?

vaccum advandce i'll try that, it was an automatic, I installed the 4 speed atleast 6 months ago flywheel surfaced and new clutch altogether my crank was drilled no adapter needed just the normal bronze bushing for the pilot.I can't get the sound to change by pushing in and out of the clutch pedal. thanks everyone

When did it start all this? At the time of the swap, or is it a new development? What shape is the transmission in? Did you put in a used one? If so, did you drive the vehicle it came from?
I am thinking its transmission related, possibly a bearing going out, such as the input shaft bearing. It would make more noise under a load.

There isn't really much that can make an rpm related squeal with the accessory belts removed on the engine side of things.

I do not want to be a compleate buzzkill here but i once heard a
main bearing make the exact noise you describe in a 250 chevy
engine that still had good o.p. really hope im wrong.

I also think it might be a crank bearing spun or no oil. My son spun a bearing in one of my cars and it sounded similar to a belt squeal. Sorry about the possible bad news. :( javascript:emoticon(':(')
