Ok, to start i'm looking at the older pushbutton transmissions for my 73 Duster. I'm not really worried about matching numbers and if possible, with modifications, i would like to add a 63 furry dash to the duster to have the pushbuttons plus i really like the dash. first question, did the slant six's have pushbuttons? and if anyone knows what they are called, or something better? second if anyone knows dimensions of the 2 is the 63 fury much shorter or longer in width than a 73 duster? if its longer i could make carfull mods and apply fiberglass to make it look cleaner.

thanks,
Matt

this dash,

There where slants with push button transmission up until 1965 or so, the last year it was a mess, you could get a wire transmission with floor console for example before they switched to the lever transmission.

The Chrysler shop manuals call it a "push button gearshift control".

There are lots of different buttons used over the years, the most common is the Valiant model with a large (like a barn door) panel and huge round buttons, the Lancer from 61 have a very nice small panel with square buttons, but they messed it up in 62 when the Lancer also got round buttons and a real ugly dash.

If you have cold weather in the winter, do take some care, the push button mechanics likes to freeze when it gets cold sometimes.

Be careful with the dash, the radius of the dash where it meets the windshield has to be the same or it will look very nasty, if you got that right I think it should be possible to adapt the rest to fit, but it is always tricky to get the dash from another car to look good.

Depending on your vehicle licensing/laws you may be TSOL if they require the orignal VIN to be present...on the '73+ vehicles it's attached to the dash on drivers side, and visible through the windsheild...on the early 60's vehicles it's a tag rivetted to the driver's door frame usually.
These use special rivets, and can't be "transplanted"...here in Oregon they also require the underhood tag, but won't accept the driver's door sticker...

FYI.

Also, the Typewriter is less than ideal, prone to breakages and difficult to set up. Just saying.

64 was the last year for the push buttons, 56 was the first year but was only a two speed tranny. Get the controls out of a 57 Chrysler as the neutral button is also the start button.

I don't agree. I have a 64 Valiant pushbutton setup in my 66 Cuda. It is mounted in a floor console between the bucket seats. The trans has a manual shift valve body, so the buttons get pushed a lot. The Main problem, is finding good cables (they are expensive).

Huh... when I registered my Dart all I showed them was the metal tag riveted to the door frame and they said "OK". Maybe something has changed?

Either way, I think you will find that the inherent designs are too far apart to be easily adapted, though I would love that dash in my '65, sans pushbuttons.

In '65 they moved to a column mounted auto trans shifter instead of the pushbutton, and it was still cable operated.

For A-Body Mopars, 1960 thru 1965 are the cable activated 904 transmissions.
Some minor differences thru those years, mainly with the 65... as already noted.
I have a number of these trannies... either good used units or "cores", needed a rebuild.

the VIN can be carefully drilled and glued to the other dash, and around here they aren't to strict about it since the vehicle is registered and honestly they never looked to see if one was there. i don't have inspections here either. so that shouldn't be a problem but i am worried that the size of the dash wont be possible to transfer. so, that being said how about incorporating the buttons into my dash could i pull a 63 A727 and pushbuttons and do this? or any better ideas?

A 904 pre 1968 will not fit your 73 crank, but if you can solve that it would be possible, but a bit tricky to get the push button panel to blend in with the existing dash.

Another solution that works with 904's from 1967 and up is Retroteks Smartshift http://www.retrotekspeed.com/, it's not very cheap though, you just get a small aluminum push button panel that is easy to fit to the dash, an electronics box and an electric actuator that does the gear shifting for you.

A 1960 -67 "small hub" 904 trans can be installed behind a 68 and later "big hub" crankshaft, if you use the special adapter bushing.
The problem is when you try to use a big hub trans with a small hub engine.
