Doc and other racers.......does a windage tray or crank scrapper jeopardize oil spray that is needed to lube the cam or oil pump gear on our SL6's?
In other words, is this risky for a street motor or is there enough oil pumped through the engine to keep the lobes happy.

Is there a preference? windage tray verses a crank scrapper or both?

If there is a potential oiling issue that is dependent on oil splash from the crank?
Is a scraper less risky?

try this site..........I purchased mine and it works great although I don't they are of much use unless you are turning lot and lots of rpms.........have never found an article proving or disproving H.P. gains
Best regards to you and yours

What did you purchase? a single scraper, both scrapers or the windage tray or all three pieces?

Ted,
I would think not as you would still get Valvetrain return through the lifter Bores/ gallery and "fling from the Crank and rods above the Windage tray.

The Tray keeps the crank out of the stuff that's in and/or returning to the sump.

I am sure more knowledgeable people will chime in.

Ted.........I had a windage tray from back in the day so I purchased the UP scraper which I felt (my own opinion) would do the most good. This engine is going to Bonneville so we are looking for every advantage we can find no matter how small. Good luck with your project

I have never seen any harmful effects from using a tray or scraper.
I only use a scraper on the "up" (cam) side, we use a special type of scraper / baffel on the down side, one that directs the oil downward and into the sump.

It is best to design your system so the cam lobes oil from the return oil, thru lifter bosses.

anyone with experience using a screen type of baffle?
like described here
http://victorylibrary.com/mopar/baffle.htm

asking as I contacted Mike Jefferies about making a windage try for use in a slant in a D-150,, he said that due to the oil pick up tube location for the truck pans, his trays would not fit,,,don't know but I thought maybe I could work around that with a screen tray mounted in the pan,,

Also, because the crankshaft is spinning very fast when the engine is running, it creates a rather strong wind. This wind causes waves in the oil sump which can increase aeration. The windage tray protects the oil sump from this wind, hence its name.
That is a quote from Bridget A. Baran's master degree paper from MIT on the subject of Engine Lubrication Oil Aeration, where different designs of windage trays are tested in an engine.

A comment to Dadtruck: The latest design from Milodon for Chevys is a tray with hundreds of micro-louvres, which they claim is superior to a screen. That may have something to do with the difference in prices also...

Enjoy!

I take a die grinder and cut into my heads so the oil doesn't pool in the head. It runs off and into the lifters.

Ok, now I am terribly confused, because I SWEAR that slant six rods have oil jets that squirt oil up onto the camshaft...

Now, am I cornfuzedicated? I'm certain I remember both reading it and verifying the rod passages were open on the SL6 I rebuilt almost 30 years ago.....

Mind you, I've been into a number of engines and I could be just getting senile....
