Post subject:  Horn Wiring

The horn system in my 81 Lebaron hasn't been hooked up since I got the car. I do have the horns, but the wires under the hood look fried. There is a connector for one of the horns, but the other connector is missing and the wire is pretty frayed. I've tried connecting just one of the horns and grounding the frayed wire, but I get nothing. Has anyone replaced these wires before? Or does anyone have any experience with aftermarket horn setups? I don't mind if it's not stock looking if it's easier than replacing the stock setup from the steering wheel back.

There is a horn relay that gets power at all times. The horn button on the wheel grounds the relay, and allows current to flow to the wires at your horns. Trace those wires back to find the relay. Check if the relay is getting power, and check to see if your horn switch works. All this can be done with a multimeter.

If the horn switch works, and the relay is getting power, check for voltage at the horns while pressing the horn button. If there is no power to them, you have a bad relay, or bad wires to the horns, bad power supply wire to the relay, bad horns, or a marginal ground in the horn button.
