i scored an engine replacement for my 64 dart..
was supposed to be a runner but the guy yanked it before i could here it run..the deal was that i would give it the once over twice and if the results were satisfactory i would pay him the cash-

i have rebuilt plenty of engines but never got into a slant 6.. so my knowledge is very limited due to lack of experience-

first plan was to degrease the beast, drain the oil than drop the pan and oil pump to inspect..
pulled the plugs and 5 were wet, not really fouled but wet-

pan dropped found some hardened broken up valve seals, along with a bunch of gritty sludge right below the oil-pump, distributor openings in the block.. what's this from??

i noticed that when i turned the engine over i could hear compression coming from the crankcase.. (not good)

that led me to a to do a leakdown test.. the cylinders wouldn't even hold 20 psi.. the pressure would go up to 80 than leak down, when i shot oil in the cylinders you can clearly hear that the air was leaking from the bores..also when i pushed air into the cylinders the engine rotated.. i even took the rockers off so i was sure the valves wouldn't open -

when i looked under the engine what i saw was this:
the oil was airated and seemed to be leaking from the piston?? i stopped the test after the 3rd piston did this..
why would this happen???

needless to say i ain't buying the engine.. it was obviously not very well taken care of, and as i result she's pretty whopped!

has anyone had any experience with these situations??
like i said the engine won't be finding a home in my car.. it's more of a i just want to know situation-

i need a decent running engine to throw into this car, so if yer in the L.A. area and ya know of someone pass my info along-

thanks-

r

I am rebuilding my moms boyfriend's '99 F250 superduty 7.3L 6 speed truck after the block got cracked because he didn't put anti freeze in it during the winter :( So we got a new motor from a guy and it had set outside, it was no good, rust in the cylinders and such took it back. Got a "runner" from him, but just like you didn't get to hear it run, the truck had been rolled though  but we pulled the motor anyway. Did a leak down on it and the number 1 cylinder only had 2% Leak! That's really good. Went onto cylinders 2-4 and they all leaked 85% Tested the other side and 85% leak from all of the other cylinders. I now have the heads off my old motor set next to the new block that has been re manufactured with .010 over pistons. The intake valves on the "new" heads had been held open with junk from when the truck overturned except for cylinder 1 because it seems to have been a dead cylinder being super clean. As a result I'm still waiting on head gaskets for it and we are still without a truck. Oh and my old motor that still ran when i pulled it built up too much compression too fast to get the piston to TDC, it would blow the ratchet out of my hands, so I knew that motor was good. Oh and after all this the guy called us and told us that it had a knock in it when they had it  So now i have to check the bottom end for wear and possibly put new bearings through it. So I know what you are going through and that it sucks when people are not 100% truthful/knowledgeable about what they sell.
