i got a 73 duster with a slant six and a 230 three in the floor some day i am gonna put in a 833 od 4 speed and i was wondeing if i could use a v8 clutch in my slant what kinds of modifiactions would it take. becouse i know that the slant clutch has a shatering point of 5500 or 6000 someware in there and i dont care to much for that

The only V8 clutch that will fit the /6 passenger car flywheel and bellhousing is the 9.5" clutch used in 273 A-bodies and maybe some other 273s. Spec Clutch has a nice 9.5" clutch that will take whatever you can throw at it. The stock iron flywheel is the next explosion liability, but most 225s turn slow enough neither the clutch nor the flywheel are in danger.

I'm planning an aluminum flywheel from Wilcap (I assume I'll have to make sure it's made for a pre-'67 crank), but was there ever a P/N provided for the Spec Clutch setup that was settled on (with the organic material)? I read through the original thread again and couldn't find a number posted once things were settled on.

Yeah that much I knew. I was just wondering if there's a P/N I can give them when I call for the 9.5" organic setup drilled for the stock 122 tooth flywheel.

The spec clutch stage 2 is 252-2...They will know what you need once you talk to them. BUT....

Currently I'm not terribly impressed with the Stage 2 clutch, it's had it's break in period and in the course of 3 time trial runs I managed to wither and fade the set up...it's fine for daily driving, though.

Currently I think the hub springs are too soft or there aren't enough of them, as one recent launch it felt like the tranny and engine communication wrapped up like a spring and when I let off the gas pedal suddenly it was like 'snap' I had go power again. (This last go around I had to go from 1st gear launch at 4k, down to 2k and run the clock up from there...which made for not so good 1/4 times...) :cry:

I'm going to order another one for the next engine...I'm thinking either Stage 3+ or one of the 6 pad rigid hub pucks... And when the guy asks how much horsepower (instead of "torque") I'm estimated at having I'll just have to tell them I have Tilley's numbers so I get one that is sprung right to 'grap' and lock... :roll:

The stock Borg and Beck 9 1/4" was fine for about 2-3 drag races and a few thousand miles before it started to fade...the 9 1/4" tends to wither out and die, rather than "explode"....

I hate to hear this about the Spec clutches. I have been using a McLeod 9" disc (early Mustang) and Mopar size PP (also 9") on my '64 Dart with rock solid launches for about 20k miles.

That's why I'm curious to see how Josh does with a stage 5....

I'm sure after a bit of feed back they'll be able to engineer things better.

Kesteb hasn't had the problems I'm having but, he's using a much lighter car and not launching at high rpms either....

I have a Stage III actually. It's the same small diameter cover, but with a 6-puck disc. I decided to stay with a sprung hub.

D.I. Did you have to limit your clutch pedal travel to ensure the diaphragm spring doesn't go over-center? Did you retain the over-center spring on the clutch pedal?

Over center spring came out when I installed it. I was able to adjust the clutch to actuate the diaphragm between the floor and about 1" off of it...pedal at rest is a few inches off the floor...I've had to re-adjust it 2 more times since then to keep the adjustment...I'm about 1/2 way down the long A-body clutch rod that Brewer's sells. I can nose it up to the line by just letting off a little on the pedal, you can feel it grab but doesn't have the 'tug' of the overcenter spring, pretty easy to play with...it just doesn't like a 4-6K clutch dump (and using street tires it's not like I'm locking it up either...)

I know if I go the route of the rigid hub puck , she isn't going to be street friendly anymore, that's for sure...

Called Spec, and whined about the lack of lock up at 6k on the clock....got a different tech than the last time...looks like they don't have pricing for anything above a stage 3 because no one has built one, yet...

Talk about a few options...after some hard pressed negotiation it looks like the Stage 3 clutch disk can replace the stage 2 clutch disk without a pressure plate upgrade...Have a stage 3 puck on the way (I'll let you know how it goes Josh....)...price for disk only was $164+shipping....

I will be pulling the 280/270 engine Sunday and dropping in the "AM" engine.... will break in engine, then swap stage 3 clutch and heavy flywheel the next time around....

I hope they can get their act together as well. Mcleod doesn't really have anything that is a bolt in for our Slant 6 pattern. Ryan's has worked flawlessly, with slicks and running 3 runs back to back without a single fade issue. But it is not a Slant 6 clutch or PP. They(Spec)need to be able to duplicate this and they will have the corner on the market. They are already making the pressure plates, so hopefully they can be beefed up and mated with the proper disc to give us all a good 4 speed setup for drag racing. Keep us posted.
