My 71 SL6 Dart (Auto Trans) won't start/run unless I hold the key a tad away from a complete return to the 'run' position after cranking, which would lead me to believe the ignition switch is faulty. This cropped up after I replaced the idler arm, and while doing so at one point I had the steering wheel locked, didn't realize it and was trying to turn the (off the ground) wheels with arm power (against the key lock, to no avail of course). I haven't taken the steering column apart yet but does this problem sound like the ignition switch or might the key/lock mechanism also be damaged. Thanks |

The key/lock is separate from the switch, but to get at them you have to pull the steering wheel and the lock plate. I really doubt that you damaged the switch by trying to turn the wheels - it was probably just coincidence as the lock plate doesn't directly couple to the switch. It isn't a really hard job with the right tools (steering wheel puller, etc.), except for getting the little C ring at the lock plate and avoiding dropping pieces down inside the column. There's a special tool to help hold down the lock plate so you can get the C-clip out, and magnetized screwdrivers help with the screws. Don't forget to tie a string to the flat connector on the old switch to use in feeding in the new one. |
