Post subject:  oil pump rebuilding?

im in the process of rebuilding my 65 valiant leaning tower of power. and prior to tear down, the motor had quite low pressure. it took a good 5-8 seconds for the light to shut off. and that was with a new oil change with some 20/50. i want to make sure everything goes right, and is good as can be.

this is my first mopar, so bare with me. it looks like i can take the oil pump apart and get to the internals, can i rebuild this thing or do i need a new one? what are the better parts to fix and how do i go about finding them and actually rebuilding.

thanks guys

I've never taken a /6 pump apart, but it seems very similar in to the Mopar BB ones that I've had apart and no doubt it's not too hard to find O-rings and to find or make the gaskets. Other than just removing and cleaning the relief valve, unless it's leaking I wouldn't recommend taking the part apart, as there's really nothing you can fix - if the parts are worn, you'll need a new pump.

I wouldn't trust the oil pressure switch; I've seen too many get flaky and turn on the light even with plenty of pressure. Hook up a pressure gauge 1st and verify that there's a problem before taking things apart.
